LEWISTON, Maine - The Bates College baseball team scored seven times in the bottom half of the 8th inning en route to a 12-5 win against the University of Maine at Farmington in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon.
The Beavers had their offense rolling early putting up three runs in the top of the 1st inning. Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) led off the game with a single into left field, stole 2nd base and scored on an RBI single from Hunter LaBossiere (Oxford, Maine). Back-to-back walks from Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) and Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) loaded the bases for the Beavers with nobody out. Will Cauchon (Kingston, Mass.) ripped a two-RBI single to right center to give the Beavers the 3-0 lead.
Bates cut into the lead in the bottom of the 1st scoring one run on an RBI single from Tyler Attal. But the Beavers were able to get the run right back in the top of the 2nd inning when Bloch doubled in LaBossiere to make it a 4-1 game.
Jack Brennan led off the bottom of the 2nd with a single, stole 2nd base, and then came into score when Ben Genser single through the hole on the left side. Genser came into score making it a 4-3 game on an RBI groundout from Drew Fallon.
Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the 5th. Attal crushed a one-out home run to left field to tie the game at four. Henry Jamieson walked and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Brennan.
The Beavers battled to re-tie the game in the top of the 6th. Coombs reached 1st on an error and advanced to 2nd on the play. He moved up to 3rd on a groundout from Bloch. Sargent came through clutch with an RBI single to score Coombs and knot the game up at five.
Things began to unravel for the Beavers in the bottom of the 8th. Liam Yardley and Drew Fallon each walked to lead off the inning. The Beavers were able to record a big out on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt to keep runners at 1st and 2nd with one out. Christopher Cimino delivered an RBI single to give the Bobcats the lead. Attal followed with a SAC fly to make it 7-5. The Bobcats went on to score five more runs, all with two outs to take a 12-5 lead. Brandon Biggane hit a two-run home run and Yardley delivered a two-RBI double to break the came open.
Ky Morris (East Wenatchee, Wash.) started on the mound for the Beavers and pitched the first four innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out a pair. Logan Holcomb (Hebron, Connecticut) threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two. Sargent and LaBossiere each went 2-4 with an RBI to pace the Beavers.
John Tully, Matthew Shrake, Micah Sheats, and Ian McAslan combined to throw 7.1 innings of one run relief for Bates. Brennan went 3-3 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored while Attal and Dylan Azcarate each picked up a pair of hits.

The Beavers will gear up for a big conference weekend as they travel to Vermont to take on Northern Vermont-Lyndon in a four game series on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's 1st game will begin at 12:00 PM.
