Beavers Unable to Keep Pace with Falcons, Drop Both Ends of Thursday’s Doubleheader

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team was unable to keep up with the explosive Fisher College offense on Thursday afternoon at Hippach Field, dropping both ends of the doubleheader 13-6 and 28-1.

Game One

Colby Johnson led off the game with a double to left center to quickly give the Falcons a runner in scoring position. He moved over to 3rd on a wild pitch, standing just 90 feet away with nobody out. Beaver starting pitcher Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) got a strike out and a weak pop out to 2nd and was just one out away from getting out of the jam when Jeremy Renta ripped a single to center to get the Falcons on the board.

The Falcons tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd to extend their lead to 3-0. After Harriman recorded two quick outs, Ivanuel Hernandez, Renta, and Tim Catalano hit three consecutive doubles to push across the two runs.

The Beavers offense got rolling in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Danny Terhune (South Burlington, Vermont) hit a one out single to record the Beavers 1st hits of the game. Hunter LaBossiere (Oxford, Maine) followed with his 1st home run of the season, a lined shot to right center to get the Beavers on the board. Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) and Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) followed with back-to-back singles to keep the line moving. After a flyout to left field, Derek Gendreau (Hampden, Maine) hit a single to shortstop that allowed Bloch to come into score and tie the game up at three.

The Falcons regained a lead in the 4th inning when Michael Stellato led off with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Miguel Torres.

The Falcons offense kept rolling in the 5th inning as Hernandez ripped a lead off home run to chase Harriman from the game. Catalano and Stellato drew consecutive walks, moved over to 2nd and 3rd after an error on a pick off attempt, and came into score on a two-RBI single from Jose Aybar.

Fisher scored six runs on four hits in the 6th inning to open their lead up to 13-3. Catalano, Stellato, Aybar, Torres, and Johnson each tallied RBIs in the inning.

The Beavers kept battling in the 6th, picking up three runs to cut into the Falcons lead. The Beavers loaded the bases with two outs. A misplay on a ground ball off the bat of Bloch kept the inning alive and allowed Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) to score. Sargent followed and ripped a two-RBI double to deep right center.

In the bottom of the 7th, Gendreau and Will Cauchon (Kingston, Mass.) hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning but were stranded on base to end the game.

Harriman pitched four-plus innings giving up five runs on 11 hits while striking out a pair. Sargent and Gendreau each finished 2-4 while Sargent and LaBossiere each had a pair of RBIs to lead the Beavers.

Yadriel Cuadrado went five innings, giving up three runs on six hits to pick up the win. Johnson, Renta and Catalno each recorded three hits and a pair of RBIs to pace Fisher.

Game Two

The Falcons offense had a huge game in the 2nd end of the doubleheader, rattling out 25 hits and scoring 28 runs in the victory. The Falcons ripped six home runs in the contest, three from Hernandez, a pair from Stellato, and one from Yariel Salinas.

Hernandez ripped a two-run home run and Stellato tacked on a three-run home run in the 1st to help take a quick 6-0 lead.

Fisher's offense kept rolling in the 2nd inning, sending 18 men to the plate, scoring 14 runs to open up a big lead. Hernandez hit his 2nd home run of the game in the inning. Stellato added an RBI double and a home run while Salinas ripped a three run home run to right center as the big knocks in the inning for the Falcons.

Hernandez kept his day rolling in the 3rd, ripping his 3rd home run of the game and the 4th of the day, this time a two-run shot to extend the lead for the Falcons.

Tibbitts and Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) tallied consecutive singles to open up the 3rd inning. After a double play ball moved Tibbitts over to 3rd, Bloch hit a ball back to the pitcher that was thrown away to record the 1st run of the game for Farmington.

Fisher tacked on six more runs in the fourth to finish off Thursday afternoon's scoring.

LaBossiere hit his 26th career double in the bottom of the 1st inning, tying him for the program record for doubles in a career. He finished the game 2-3 to lead the Beavers.

Hernandez, Renta, Stellato, and Aybar each had three hits for the Falcons. Stellato finished with seven RBIs while Hernandez and Salinas each added five.
