Beavers Drop a Pair on the Road to the Monks

STANDISH, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Wednesday evening at the hands of the Saint Joseph's College Monks. The Beavers dropped game one, 3-1 and game two, 14-6.

Game One

Game one was a low scoring pitchers dual as all four combined runs came in the first three innings of the game.

The Monks got on the scoreboard early in the bottom of the 1st inning as Jared Wilhelm opened up the game with a triple to the right center field gap and came into score on an RBI groundout from Jack Moltenbrey.

The Beavers were able to get that run back quickly in the top of the 2nd. Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) drew a lead off walk and moved over to 2nd base on SAC bunt from Will Cauchon (Kingston, Mass.). Coombs stole 3rd and then scored on a two-out RBI single from Sam Peterson (South Berwick, Maine). Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) followed with a single of his own. Following a balk, the Beavers had a pair of runners in scoring position but ended up being stranded to end the inning.

Wilhelm gave the Monks a lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning when he ripped a solo home run into the trees in left field. An RBI single from Matt Thibault brought in Moltenbrey to give the Monks a 3-1 lead.

Neither team was able to push across another run but the Beavers best chance to score came in the top of the 6th. Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) led off with a double to left center. After Monks starter Padraig Mac Seain got back-to-back outs, Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) singled to 3rd to give the Beavers runner on the corner to chase Mac Seian from the game. Ethan Smith took over and got Peterson to ground out to short to end the inning.

Will Harriman battled all game on the mound for Farmington, going six innings giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out a pair. Hunter Labossiere (Oxford, Maine) and Pruett each had a pair of hits to lead the Beavers.

Mac Seian pitched 5.2 for the Monks, scattering six hits and giving up just one run while striking out two. Wilhelm was the leader at the plate, going 2-3 with the home run and triple, two runs and an RBI. Moltenbrey also recorded a pair of hits for St. Joe's.

Game Two

The Beavers were able to jump out to an early lead in the top of the 1st inning as Cauchon singled into right field, allowing Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) to come into score after he drew a walk earlier in the inning.

The Monks responded quickly however with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out two-run home run from Jackson Stanton to take a 2-1 lead.

The Beavers looked prime to put a crooked number up on the board in the top of the 3rd inning loading the bases with nobody out on a double from Sargent and consecutive walks from Coombs and Cauchon. But Monks reliever Logan Butkins tight roped out of the bases loaded jam to maintain the lead.

St. Joe's then rallied behind the momentum boost from Butkins, scoring six runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Stanton ripped his 2nd home run of the game, this time a three-run shot in the inning. Dawson Gundlah picked up an RBI double and Michael Wearne added and RBI knock in the inning for the Monks.

The Monks scored six more in the bottom of the 4th inning to extend their lead to 14-1. Terry Morrissey and Logan Dee each recorded two-RBI doubles to highlight the rally for St. Joe's.

Farmington got three runs back in the top of the 5th off the bat of Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, Maine) who smashed his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to straight away left field.

Coombs picked up an RBI double and Tibbitts added an RBI single in the top of the 6th to make it a 14-6 game.

The Monks got to Beavers' starting pitcher Aaron Goscke (Gorham, Maine) who gave up eight runs in 2.1 innings, striking out three. Sargent had a big game at the plate, recording three hits, including a double. Coombs added a pair of hits, an RBI, and a run scored for the Beavers.

Butkins picked up the win in relief for the Monks, going two innings of no-hit ball while striking out one. Stanton led the Monks at the plate going 3-3 with a pair of home runs, five RBIs, and three runs scored. Morrissey also was 3-3 with two RBIs and a run score for St. Joe's.
