Beavers Rally Late Twice to Sweep the Owls

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team rallied in the late innings of both ends of Friday's doubleheader to earn a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victories on the road against the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Game One

The Beavers rallied late, scoring three times in the top of the 7th inning to escape with a 4-2 victory.

The Owls struck first in the bottom of the 1st inning off a two-run shot from Timmy Burns to open up a quick 2-0 lead. The two-run home run from Burns would result in the only runs the Beavers starting pitcher Ky Morris (East Wenatchee, Wash.) allowed. Morris went the first six innings, giving up just the two runs on four hits, walking one, and striking out a pair to pick up his 3rd win of the season.

The Beavers cut their deficit in half in the top of the 3rd. Hunter LaBossiere (Oxford, Maine) led off the inning with a single through the left side, moving him to within one hit of the Farmington all-time hits record. Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) followed with a single up the middle to give the Beavers runners at the corners with nobody out. Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) drove in LaBossiere with a SAC fly to left to make it a 2-1 game.

Morris and UMPI starting pitcher Payton Jones dueled through the middle innings, keeping hitters off balance through the 6th inning. Morris allowed just three Owls to reach base in the 3rd-6th inning. Jones was able to limit traffic on the bases as well as the Beavers only had one batter reach 2nd base until the 6th.

The Beavers were able to get to Jones in the top of the 7th. Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) hit a one-out single to left center and Sam Peterson (South Berwick, Maine) followed with a single of his own. LaBossiere then reached on an error to load the bases with one out for Bloch. Bloch came through with a clutch two-strike single through the left side, scoring Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) who pinch ran for Tibbitts. Bloch's single chased Jones from the game and the Owls brought in Dakota Morrow in to try to escape the jam. Morrow was met by Sargent who delivered the go-ahead single into right field, scoring Peterson. Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) added an insurance run with a SAC fly to extend the Beavers lead to 4-2.

Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) slammed the door in the 7th inning striking out a pair to pick up his 1st save of the season.

Bloch and Sargent were each 2-3 to lead the Beavers at the plate.

Garrett Chadwick finished 2-3 to pace the Owls.

Game Two

The Beavers scored a run in the 8th and the 9th innings en route to the 5-3 victory to sweep the doubleheader

The Beavers offense got rolling early with a one-out single from Bloch and a no-doubt home run off the bat of Sargent to quickly take a 2-0 lead just three batters into the game.

The Beavers added another run in the top of the 2nd inning. Peterson drilled a one-out double to right center and LaBossiere ripped the record tying single to left field to give the Beavers runners at the corners. Bloch delivered a SAC fly, bringing in Peterson to make it a 3-0 game.

On the mound, Bloch was unblemished until the bottom of the 5th inning. The Owls were able to load the bases with one out on a walk from Mason Long, a single from Ricky Goupille, and a single from Joey Lippo. Burns hit a ball to shortstop that was misplayed, allowing a pair of runs to score. Jones drew a bases loaded walk later in the inning to knot the game up at three.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the 8th inning when Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, Maine) ripped his 2nd home run of the week to give the Beavers the lead.

Tibbitts drew a two-out bases loaded walk in the top of the 9th inning to give the Beavers some insurance.

Chris Albert (Bradley, Maine) pitched the final two innings of the game, giving up just one hit and striking out one to pick up his 1st save of the season. Anthony Boyle (Wallingford, Conn.) picked up the win in relief, going 2.1 innings giving up no hits and striking out a pair.

Danny Terhune (South Burlington, Vermont), Coombs, Tibbitts, and Peterson each finished with a pair of hits for the Beavers.

Goupille picked up a pair of hits to pace the Owls.
