WATERVILLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team dropped both games on Sunday's doubleheader, 7-6 in game one and 10-7 in game two against Thomas College.
Game One
In a rematch of Saturday's doubleheader where the Beavers dropped both ends, the Terriers looked to have picked up where they left off on Saturday in the bottom of the 1st inning in game one on Sunday. The Terriers pushed across six runs to jump out to a big early lead. Jarrad Willette delivered the big blow in the inning, a three-run homerun with two outs. Nick Hutson and Jason Bartlett each delivered RBI singles in the inning for the Terriers.
Cam Haynes picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the 2nd to drive in Elijah Morton who led off the inning with a double.
The Beavers started to chip away in the top of the 3rd inning. Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) led off the inning with a walk and Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) reached on an error. Both came around to score on a two-RBI double from Hunter LaBossiere (Oxford, Maine) to make it 7-2.
The Beavers kept chipping away in the top of the 4th inning. Derek Gendreau (Hampden, Maine) led off with a single to center. Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) followed with a double to left-center field, but a good relay from the Terriers cut Gendreau down at the plate for the 1st out of the inning. Pruett ripped a two-out RBI single to right center to score Bloch. Coombs kept the inning alive for the Beavers by drawing a walk and giving Farmington runners a 1st and 2nd with LaBossiere coming up. LaBossiere stayed hot with an RBI single to left, making it a 7-4 ball game.
In the top of the 6th the Beavers once again had some two out magic, scoring a pair of runs to cut the Terriers lead to 7-6. LaBossiere picked up his 3rd RBI of the day with a single to left bringing home Coombs. An error by Thomas kept the inning alive for Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) who came through with a clutch RBI single to right center to make it a one run game.
The Beavers got the tying run to 2nd base with two outs but were unable to bring him around to tie the game.
After giving up seven runs in the first two innings, starting pitcher Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) settled down, allowing just three Terriers to reach base in the 3rd-6th innings. LaBossiere finished a perfect 4-4 with three RBIs. Sargent was 3-4 with an RBI while Coombs and Bloch each picked up a pair of hits for the Beavers.
For the Terriers Hutson was 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Haynes was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Game Two
The Beavers jumped out to a four run lead in the top of the 2nd inning. Will Cauchon (Kingston, Mass.), Gendreau, and Sam Peterson (South Berwick, Maine) each hit two-out singles to load the bases. Pruett came through with a clutch two-RBI double to left center. Coombs followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to make it 4-0 Beavers.
The Terriers were able to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 2nd. Matt Seymour hit a two-out triple to get the rally started for Thomas. Bartlett followed with a walk setting up a 1st and 3rd with two outs situation. Seymour came into score when a pick off throw from Bloch got away. Reid Gagnon followed with a walk. A passed ball allowed Bartlett and Gagnon to move up to 2nd and 3rd. Bartlett came into score when Austin Stebbins reached on an error to shortstop, making it a 4-2 game.
The Terriers put up four runs in the bottom half of the 3rd inning to take a 6-4 lead. Aaron Young hit an RBI single to right with the bases loaded to score the 1st run of the inning. Seymour was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded allowing the tying run to score. Hutson came in to score on an RBI groundout from Barlett and Gagnon followed with an RBI single to right bringing home Young.
The Terriers put up four more runs in the bottom of the 5th. Hutson hit a big RBI double and Young delivered a two-RBI single in the innings for Thomas.
Down 10-4 in the top of the 7th inning, the Beavers did not quit. LaBossiere hit a one-out double to center and Danny Terhune (South Burlington, Maine) followed with a walk to start the rally for the Beavers. Sargent single to right to load the bases. LaBossiere came in to score on a wild pitch and then Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) came through with a two-out two-RBI single to make it a 10-7 game. Gendreau followed with a single of his own to bring the tying run to the plate. But Peterson grounded out to 3rd to end the game.
The Beavers lineup piled up 12 hits with all 10 players who got an at-bat registering a hit. LaBossiere and Gendreau each picked up two hits. Coombs, Gendreau, and Pruett all had two RBIs for the Beavers.
Young went 2-3 with three RBIs and Haynes finished 2-4 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Terriers.
