MEDFORD, Mass. - Perennial men's soccer power, Tufts University lived up to the hype on Sunday afternoon, taking down the University of Maine at Farmington, 7-0 in Medford, Massachusetts. Tufts improves to 2-0-1 on the season with the win. The Beavers dropped to 2-3 following the loss.
The Beavers registered the first shot on goal of the game in the 4th minute when Senior Cade McHugh (Little Compton, R.I.) ripped a shot from about 30 yards out that was stopped by Jumbo goalkeeper Nikola Antic.
The Beavers were able to hold off the Jumbos attack until the 24th minute when Taylor Feinberg cracked the scoreboard, finding the back of the net off a cross from Woovin Shin.
The Jumbos tacked on another pair of goals before the halftime intermission. The first of which came from Mateo Bargagna on a feed from Liam Gerkin in the 31st minute. Just three minutes later, Mason Shultz found Ethan Feigin in front of the goal and Feigin one-timed a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Jack Wormald (Salisbury, N.H.).
The 2nd half was more of the same for the Jumbos. Ben Verner scored a pair of goals just a minute apart to make it a 5-0 game. Luke Randolph and Anthony Bhangdia each scored a goal a minute apart in the 80th and 81st minute to extend the Jumbo lead to 7-0.
The Beavers were unable to get a shot off after McHugh's 4th minute strike.
The Jumbos held advantages in shots (28-1), shots on goal (17-1) and corner kicks (7-0).
Wormald made five saves in the first half for the Beavers while first-year Jackson Leach (Farmingdale, Maine) made five saves in the 2nd half for Farmington.
