GORHAM, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey traveled to Gorham, Maine this evening to take on the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference battle at Hannaford Field. The Huskies scored three goals in the opening period to build an early lead and kept rolling en route to a 9-0 win over the Beavers.
The Huskies opened the scoring 1:21 into the game when Abigail Chartier one-timed a Brooke Carson pass into the back of the goal. Just a minute later Chartier doubled the Huskies lead, tallying an unassisted goal to make it 2-0.Â
In the 10th minute Dylan Barr scored her 1st goal of the season on a feed from Hannah Banks, extending the Husky lead to 3-0.
The Beavers began to shift some momentum in their favor in the 13th minute, drawing four penalty corners and recording three shots including two on frame. The Beavers best opportunity to score came when Husky goalie Eleanor Folsom came off her line and sophomore Allie Bliss (Underhill, Vermont) ripped a shot that was labeled for the bottom right corner after getting past Folsom. Olivia Staggs was positioned just right for the Huskies, clearing Bliss's shot off the goalline to keep the Beavers off the scoreboard.
Carson and Banks added goals of their own early in the 2nd quarter, helping to push USM's lead to 5-0 heading into halftime.Â
The Huskies added a goal in the 3rd quarter and three in the 4th en route to the victory.
First-year goalie Ella Grant (Sturgridge, Mass.) was marvelous all game for the Beavers, making quality save after quality save to keep the Beavers within striking distance. Grant finished the game with 19 saves, a career high.
Barr and Chartier each tallied a pair of goals while Emma Samson, Norie Tibbets, Jordan Cummings, Carson, and Banks added single goals to lead the Huskies offensively.
The Beavers drop to 0-4 on the young season while the Huskies improve to 4-2 with the victory.

The Beavers travel to Colby College next Tuesday to take on the Mules in a non-conference game scheduled for 7 pm.
