CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team opened up North Atlantic Conference play on the road this afternoon against Lesley University.. The teams battled through the winds caused by Hurricane Lee, but it was the Lynx who came away with the 5-0 victory.
The Lynx were able to control the tempo of the game from beginning, holding a majority of the possession throughout. The Lynx opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Abby Kalou powered in a penalty kick after getting tangled up in the box.
Hannah Wilbur (Farmington, Maine) recorded the 1st shot of the game for the Beavers in the 18th minute, a shot for 30 yards out that Lynx goalkeeper Madison Reed was able to bend down and save.
The Lynx doubled their lead in the 23rd minute. Zoe Curtaz sent a through-ball down the sideline, allowing Haile Carrillo-Hayes to run out to it. Carillo Hayes took a couple touches and then sent a pass across the six-yard box that Beaver goalkeeper Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) dove for but was unable to deflect. After the pass got through Gonya, Chase Livesey was waiting and got enough on the one-timer to put the ball into the back of the net.
The Lynx were able to take a 2-0 lead into halftime but quickly added a goal to make it 3-0 in the opening minutes of the 2nd half. Kalou centered a cross into the box, finding a sprinting Kika Diaz who redirected the cross off the post and in.
One of the better opportunities the Beavers had came in the 53rd minute when Abby Lash (Waldoboro, Maine) found a wide open Grace Mahmood (Oxford, Conn.) on the right wing. Mahmood ripped a shot from just outside the box but Reed stood tall in making the save.
Diaz added to the Lynx lead in the 58th minute. Kalou was sent in on a break away that caused Gonya off from her line. Gonya made a remarkable save on Kalou's initial shot but the rebound dropped right to Diaz who didn't miss the wide-open net.Â
Kylie Chagnon tacked on a goal in the 82nd minute of a feed from Keira Bergman.
Gonya was strong in net all afternoon for the Beavers, finishing the game with 10 saves. Reed made a pair of saves in goal for the Lynx. Diaz scored a pair of goals while Kalou finished with a goal and two assists to lead Lesley.
The Beavers drop to 1-4-1 following the loss while the Lynx are now 4-1.
