Lash’s 1st Half Goal Leads Beavers to a 1-0 Victory Over Thomas

WATERVILLE, Maine - University of Maine at Farmington junior Forward Abby Lash (Waldoboro, Maine) found the back of the net in the 17th minute helping to push the Beavers past Thoma College on Wednesday evening in a non-conference women's soccer battle.

The Beavers controlled the game from the get go, holding a majority of the possession and held a massive advantage in shots (25-3) and shots on goals (13-2) as well as a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Lash recorded each of the first three shots of the game. The first coming in a minute into the game the Terrier goalkeeper Emilee Ireland saved to keep the game scoreless early. Lash fired another shot in the 7th minute that was off target. Lash's third shot of the game was the one that got the Beavers on the scoreboard. Lash received a pass on the left wing, took a couple of touches to get around her defender and then fired a left-footed strike on goal the Ireland jumped up to reach but could only get a fingertip on as the ball snuck into the back of the net.

The Beavers as a team recorded the first nine shots in the game as the Terriers were not able to get a shot off until the 42nd minute.

To open the 2nd half, the Terriers were able to shift some momentum in their favor in the opening five minutes. Mary Larochelle recorded a pair of shots on goal in the opening minutes of the half, both of which Beavers sophomore goalkeeper Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) was able to stop, here only two saves in the game.

After the opening five minutes, the Beavers shifted the field completely in their direction, tallying 16 shots in the half including seven on frame. Emily Rock took over for Ireland in goal in the second half and recorded seven saves.

Despite all the pressure, the Beavers were unable to extend their lead beyond one. Lash tallied eight shots, three on net while Audrey Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine) fired seven shots and five on frame.

With the victory, Gonya picked up her 2nd shutout of the season.

The Beaver will take on the Terriers in a conference contest at home on October 3rd with the game time set for 3:30 PM.
