WATERVILLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington and Thomas College men's soccer teams battled to a 1-1 tie in a non-conference contest at Smith Field on the Campus of Thomas College. The game was a rough, chippy, and gritty contest that saw six cards, including a pair of red cards, one for each team.
Mohamed Adow (Auburn, Maine) continued his fine season for the Beavers, tallying his 5th goal of the season in just the 5th minute of the game. Adow caught the Terrier defense sleeping, sneaking behind the backline to receive a throw-in from Cade McHugh (Little Compton, R.I.). Adow gathered the throw, took a touch to the middle and unleashed a rocket past the Terrier goalkeeper to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead.
The two teams went back and forth at each other after Adow's opening marker. Thomas had a pair of opportunities that looked like they were in alone with Beaver goalkeeper Jack Wormald (Salisbury, N.H.) but were called offsides.
The Terriers were able to knot the score up at one aside in the 37th minute. After a Beaver turnover around midfield, the Terriers quickly countered as Daud Abdi sent a ball through to Joshua Joseph who sniped the bottom left corner on a shot Wormald had no chance of saving.
With the game tied 1-1 and entering the 2nd half, the intensity began to heighten and the physicality began to pick up. The Beavers came out of halftime and drew a quick corner kick and then generated a pair of solid shooting opportunities that Terrier goalkeeper Jayce Nielsen denied to keep the game tied.Â
Physical play from both teams in the 55th resulted in a pair of red cards, forcing the teams to play 10 on 10 for the remaining 35 minutes.Â
Both teams had a few opportunities to take the lead but were unable to put numerous shots on target, sending several shots wide. The sides battled one another until the final whistle, having to settle for the hard fought draw.Â
The game was evenly matched with Thomas holding a slight 15-12 advantage in shots and corner kicks (7-5), while the Beavers held a narrow 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
The two teams will meet once again in two weeks on October 4th at Leib Field in Farmington for an all important conference contest that will seemingly have playoff implications attached.Â
The Beavers record is now 3-3-1 after picking up their first tie of the season. Thomas is now 1-1-4 following tonight's game.
