Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Last Second Goal Sinks Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine - Ben Shumway scored a goal with just four seconds left to lift Husson University's men's soccer team to a victory on Saturday afternoon against the University of Maine at Farmington in a non-conference contest between two North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opponents.

The Eagles won a free-kick just across the midfield line with less than 40 seconds to play. Husson goalkeeper Alex Rechsteiner came out of the goal to take the free-kick. Rechsteiner lofted a ball into the box that Beavers center back William Dowse (Sherborn, Mass.) was able to clear away. But Dowse's clear attempt went out of bounds, awarding the Eagles a corner kick. Miguel Morales raced to grab the ball, and quickly took the corner kick. Morales sent an in-swinging ball into the box that Kenny Penney was able to flick on right to Shumway who ran onto the ball, directing it into the back of the net to give the Eagles the 1-0 win.

The teams played a very evenly matched game, with both teams playing strong defensively, limiting their opponents opportunities to score. The Beavers only were able to register one shot on goal for the game, coming in the 2nd half from Coleman Watson (Readfield, Maine).

The Beavers had the first strong opportunity to score midway through the 1st half. Mohamed Adow (Auburn, Maine) received a pass in the center of the field with some space in front of him. Adow turned and ripped a shot from about 25 yards out that just went wide left, keeping the game scoreless.

In the 2nd half, Nate Chamberland ripped a shot from distance that was labeled for the upper left corner. First-year goalkeeper Jackson Leach (Farmingdale, Maine), who was making his first collegiate start, dove to his right making a miraculous save to keep the score tied.

The game seemed destined to end in a draw before Shumway's goal in the closing seconds helped the Eagles secure their 4th win of the season.

Leach was outstanding all afternoon for the Beavers, being aggressive off his line to intercept crosses, finishing with four saves.

Rechsteiner finished with one save for the Eagles.

The Eagles held advantages in shots (7-2), shots on goal (5-1), and corner kicks (7-2).
