Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Beavers Earn Important Win Over UMPI

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team took a 4th quarter lead and held on late to lead to pick up an important North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win against the University of Maine at Presque Isle, 53-48.

The Beavers jumped out to an 18-9 lead after the opening quarter. Sophomore forward Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) scored six points in the opening quarter as the Beavers shot 7-15 from the field, canning a pair of threes in the quarter.

A Jalyn Stacey (West Baldwin, Maine) jumper on the opening possession of the 2nd quarter extended the Farmington lead to 11. But from that moment forward, the Owls controlled the play, outscoring the Beavers 16-4 over the remainder of the quarter. A layup from Emily Wheaton in the final ten seconds of the half gave the Owls a one-point lead going into halftime.

The 3rd quarter was back and forth as the teams jockeyed with one another for the crucial conference win. Farmington opened up the 3rd quarter on a 6-0 run led by Sarah Poli (Benton, Maine) who scored four points to help the Beavers reclaim a five-point lead. The Owls responded with six straight points to grab a one-point lead once again.

An 8-2 run from the Owls to close out the 3rd quarter gave them a 41-36 lead heading into the 4th quarter.

The 4th quarter belonged entirely to the Beavers who scored the first nine points of the quarter to claim a four-point lead. Maddy White (Waldoboro, Maine) opened up the quarter with a huge three and hit a pair of layups to swing the momentum in the Beavers favor.

Alexis Ireland converted an and-one to pull the Owls back within a point with four minutes to play. But that was as close as UMPI would get. McMinis got to the rim for a layup on the ensuing Farmington possession to put a halt to any momentum the Owls might have grabbed. Poli hit four free throws down the stretch to close out the victory for the Beavers.

The Beavers improved to 6-10 on the season with a 3-3 record in NAC play with the victory. UMPI dropped to 7-5 with a 3-2 record in NAC play.

McMinis scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed four boards to lead the Beavers. Poli added ten points and 16 big rebounds to post her fourth double-double of the season. Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) added nine points, nine rebounds, and four assists in the win.

The Owls were paced by Ireland who finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Olivia Gray added 16 points, knocking down a pair from downtown.
