Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

4th Quarter Surge Leads Beavers to Important NAC Win

LYNDONVILLE, Vermont - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team outscored Vermont State University-Lyndon 16-6 in the 4th quarter to pick up a crucial North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest on the road, 64-58.

After a Jacqui Hamilton (Gorham, Maine) jumper gave the Beavers a 12-10 lead with 4:09 left to play in the opening quarter, the Hornets closed the quarter on a 10-1 run to take a 20-13 lead heading into the 2nd quarter.

A Sage Smith fastbreak layup extended the Hornet lead to nine in the opening minutes of the 2nd quarter but the Beavers quickly answered with a 11-2 run of their own to knot the game up at 26. First-year guard/forward Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) sparked the Beavers' run, scoring six of her team-high 21.

Seleena Porter netted a three right before the buzzer to give the Hornets a 38-35 lead heading into halftime.

Consecutive layups from Dow to open the 3rd quarter gave the Beavers a lead once again, but it did not last. Lyndon responded with a quick 6-0 scoring spurt led by four points from Smith. Riann Fortin made her presence felt inside in the 3rd quarter. Fortin finished with a game-high 28 points, including six late 3rd quarter points to help the Hornets maintain a 52-48 lead heading into the 4th quarter.

The Beavers quickly jumped out to a three-point lead in the 4th quarter after scoring the first seven points of the quarter and holding Lyndon scoreless for the opening 5:15 of the quarter. A Smith three from the left wing put a stop to the Hornets scoreless spell and not the game back up at 55 apiece.

After a Fortin free throw cut a Beaver lead to just two, Dow converted an and-one with 36 seconds left to play to put the Beavers up five and all but end the game.

Dow was a force all-game long, shooting a perfect 8-8 from the field while also grabbing six rebounds. Sarah Poli (Benton, Maine) chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds. Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) added nine points off the bench for Farmington.

Fortin paced the Hornets offensively, shooting 11-18 from the field on her way to her 28 points. Smith added 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

The Beavers improved to 7-12 on the season with a 4-5 record in NAC play.
