Spartans Score Eight to Take Care of Farmington

CASTLETON, Vermont - Vermont State University Castleton had no shortage of offense, scoring eight goals en route to taking down the University of Maine at Farmington, 8-1 on Saturday evening.

The Records:

Following the loss, Farmington dropped to 0-9 on the season while the Spartan improved to 8-4 with the win.

How it Happened:

Castleton jumped out quickly, controlling the ball and the tempo from the opening whistle. Peyton Richardson cracked the scoreboard for the hosts for the first time with a goal at the 9:28 mark off a feed from Haley Lassen

The Spartans doubled their lead 41 seconds later after drawing a penalty corner. Amelia Wilson inserted the corner, finding Emilee Higgins who slapped a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Ella Grant (Sturbridge, Mass.).

Five and a half minutes into the 2nd quarter, the Spartans were once again awarded a penalty corner. This time Wilson inserted the corner to Jess Smithson who rifled a shot past grant to make it a 3-0 game.

Emily Downing scored a pair of goals just 59 seconds apart to extend Castleton's lead to 5-0 with just under four minutes to play in the first half.

The Spartans tacked on a 6th goal in the closing moments of the half after Grant made the initial save and the rebound was blocked, the ball found Peyton Richardson found the cage.

Castleton continue to control the pace of play in the 3rd quarter, adding their 7th goal of the game 50 seconds into the quarter as Ava Laross scored her 1st goal of the game,

Emily Downing added a goal of her own at the 35:04 mark in the 3rd quarter to extend the Spartan lead to eight.

After being held without a shot until the 4th quarter, the Beavers made the most of their opportunities. Being awarded a penalty corner with a minute and 15 seconds to play, Gabby Vincentsen inserted the corner and quickly received a pass back from Elizabeth Kendall (Guilford, Maine) before firing a shot past Zoe Martin to score the Beavers first goal of the game.

Team Stats:

Castleton held advantages in shots (26-2), shots on goal (16-2), and penalty corners (19-3) to pick up the victory.

The Goalkeepers:

Grant made eight big saves for Farmington while Martin was charged with just one save to pick up the victory for Casleton.

The Beavers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 PM as they take on Colby-Sawyer on the road in New London, New Hampshire.
