Colby-Sawyer Outlasts Farmington

NEW LONDON, New Hampshire - Sophomore goalkeeper Ella Grant controlled the goal and spearheaded a gritty defensive battle from the University of Maine at Farmington on Sunday afternoon. Colby-Sawyer was able to find a few cracks in the Beavers' armor, scoring three times to walk away with a 3-0 victory.

The Records:

Farmington fell to 0-10 on the season following the loss while the Chargers improved to a stellar 9-3 record overall.

How it Happened:

The Beavers withstood some early pressure from the Chargers with a flurry of their own just five minutes into the game. Gabby Vincentsen (Bristol, Maine) had a pair of shots saved by Colby-Sawyer goalkeeper Ashlee Blashock. The Beavers kept the ball in their offensive zone as Autumn Freeman (Byron, Maine) fired a shot of her own, but Blashock was up for the task, turning away Freeman's scoring opportunity.

Colby Sawyer turned the momentum in their favor during the final five minutes of the 1st quarter. Three straight penalty corners for the Chargers led to the game's first goal. Cecilia Ponzini slid a shot past Grant at the 11:44 mark to make it a 1-0 game.

The Chargers doubled their lead in the opening minutes of the 2nd quarter on a goal from Abby Olden. Alyssa Slocum was credited with the assist on Olden's goal.

Following the Chargers taking the 2-0 lead, Grant and the backline for the Beavers really buckled down and made life tough for Colby-Sawyer. The Chargers drew multiple penalty corners throughout the game, but the defensive pressure from Farmington created tough shots. The shots that got through to Grant, she was turned away to keep the Beavers within striking distance.

The Chargers opened the 2nd half with five shots in the first three minutes. All five shots Grant turned aside, keeping the Chargers from extending the lead.

Colby-Sawyer maintained steady pressure and finally snuck another goal past Grant in the 53rd minute. After being awarded a penalty corner, Brooke Farquhar took the corner and received a pass back from Eli Connor, making it a 3-0 game.

Team Stats:

Colby-Sawyer topped the Beavers in shots (29-4), shots on goal (17-3), and penalty corners (25-1) in the victory.

The Goalkeepers:

Grant was phenomenal all game long, yielding 13 saves for Farmington. Elizabeth Kendall (Guilford, Maine) was credited with a defensive save as well for the Beavers. Blashock made three saves to pick up the shutout victory.
