The UMF Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2024 features four former athletes and one longtime administrator.
Bobby Deetjen '05 is the third inductee featured in our Hall of Fame Spotlight series. Deetjen was a standout men's basketball player during his four seasons at UMF, graduating as a member of the 1,000-point club and earning a reputation as one of the program's best two-way players.
A defining trait of Deetjen's playing career was his consistency and versatility. He possessed the unique ability to shoot from the perimeter against taller defenders while also posting up and creating mismatches against shorter ones. Throughout his four-year career, Deetjen maintained a shooting percentage between 41% and 45%, averaged between 11.6 and 14.32 points per game, and recorded around seven rebounds per game each season.
Under longtime head coach Dick Meader, Deetjen made a strong early impact in his freshman season. He posted impressive statistics, averaging 14.32 points, 7.28 rebounds, 1.08 steals, and 1.00 blocks per game. Deetjen shot efficiently at 45.32% from the field, 38.71% from beyond the arc, and 67.77% from the free-throw line. He led the team in both scoring and rebounding and was named Sunrise Conference Rookie of the Year and MMBCWA Rookie of the Year.
In his sophomore season, Deetjen continued to play a pivotal role for the Beavers. He shot 41.33% from the field, made 29 three-pointers, and accumulated 311 points, averaging 12.44 points per game. Additionally, he recorded 16 steals and 16 blocks, and averaged a career-high 7.44 rebounds over 25 games.
Entering his junior season, Deetjen was 331 points shy of the 1,000-point milestone. He surpassed this benchmark in the final game of the season, a playoff loss to Lasell University on February 27, 2004. Deetjen ended the season with 334 points, the second-highest total of his career, and averaged 12.37 points per game, with shooting splits of 44.67%/33.33%/82.24%. He was named an NAC All-Conference Honorable Mention after the 2003-2004 season.
Deetjen capped off his career by leading the Beavers in scoring during the 2004-2005 season. He hit a career-high 37 three-pointers at a 37.37% success rate, averaged 11.60 points and 6.92 rebounds per game, and contributed 19 steals and 23 blocks over 25 games.
Deetjen's career totals include 1,293 points, placing him 13th on the program's all-time scoring list. He also amassed 716 rebounds, 212 assists, and 76 blocks. Deetjen ranks 5th all-time in total blocks, 7th in career free throws made (282), and 8th in three-point shooting percentage (.366).
After graduating from UMF in 2005, Deetjen earned a Master's in Educational Leadership from the University of Maine. He is currently the Director at the Mid-Coast School of Technology in Morrill, Maine.
