WATERVILLE, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington men's track and field team opened their season at the Elm City Classic hosted by Colby College on Friday and Saturday. Senior standout Justin Castaldo (Scarborough, Maine) also opened his indoor track season at the Early Bird Invite at The Track in Boston, Massachusetts. As a team, the Beavers placed 4th overall at the Elm City Classic.
Top Beaver Performances
Castaldo competed against some of the top runners in the country on Saturday, racing against athletes from all three divisions. He ran the 5,000 meters, finishing with a school record time of 15:24.62, placing 31st overall in the event.
There were numerous standouts for the Beavers at the Elm City Classic. Junior Nate Trussell (Berwick, Maine) placed 2nd overall in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.63 seconds to qualify for the New England Championship. The time also set a program record. Trussell added a 5th place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 23.64 seconds.
Sophomore Alex Crews (Winslow, Maine) kicked off his season in style, winning the shot put and placing 4th in the weight throw. Crews' best shot put attempt measured 13.42 meters, while his best weight throw came in at 12.10 meters.
First-year Owen Booker (Lisbon, Maine) set a school record in the heptathlon, finishing with a total of 3,744 points, good for 2nd place overall.
Senior Ben Vachon (Portland, Maine) opened his season with a 5th place finish in the heptathlon, scoring 3,053 points. As part of the heptathlon, Vachon recorded a triple jump of 6.65 meters, qualifying for the New England Championship.
Senior Seamus Reeve (Kittery, Maine) placed 6th overall in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.31 seconds.
First-year Logan Burns (Islesboro, Maine) had an impressive collegiate debut, finishing 2nd in the long jump, 3rd in the triple jump, and 8th in the 200 meters. Burns posted a long jump of 6.31 meters, a triple jump of 11.62 meters, and a 200-meter time of 24.69 seconds.
Sophomore Ethan Linscott (Lakeville, Maine) placed 5th in the 600 meters with a time of 1:31.53.
Senior Connor Freeman (Bath, Maine) finished 7th in a competitive mile field, clocking in at 4:45.29.
Sophomore Andrew LaFlamme (Nashua, N.H.) contributed with a 4th place finish, while junior James Riley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) placed 6th in the 3,000 meters. LaFlamme finished in 9:12.20, and Riley posted a time of 9:46.58.
The four-man relay team of Linscott, LaFlamme, Freeman, and Jimmy Reel (Nashua, N.H.) placed 2nd in the distance medley relay, finishing in 11:42.20.
First-year James Fenton (Portland, Maine) placed 4th in the shot put with a best throw of 12.09 meters.
