Farmington Opens Florida Trip with Doubleheader Sweep of MCLA

SANFORD, Florida - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team won a pair of back and forth contests against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts to kick-off their Florida Trip. The Beavers took care of business in game one taking down the Trailblazers, 9-6. In game two, the Beavers fought from behind to tie the game in the 7th inning and take down MCLA in overtime.

Game One

After a scoreless first inning, the Beavers cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Sophomore third baseman Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) led off the inning with a shot to right center for a double. Sam Peterson (Berwick, Maine) was the next batter and tagged one to straight away center field that just missed a home run by a matter of feet but bounced over the wall for an RBI ground rule double.

After Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, Maine) drew a two-out walk, first-year center fielder Jayden Meader (Farmington, Maine) delivered an RBI single to right center to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.

After MCLA executed a double steal on a first and third situation in the top of the 3rd to cut the lead in half, Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) led off the 3rd inning with a single up the middle and came into score on an error to make it 3-1.

MCLA started to get to Beavers starting pitcher Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) in the top of the 4th. Ty Mazzeo led off with a single and stole second base to quickly give the Blazers a runner in scoring position. The next batter was Henry Blake who got hit by a pitch. After Goschke got Clayton Dutfield to strikeout, Goschke threw a pickoff attempt away bringing in Mazzeo and allowing Blake to get all the way to 3rd base. Matt Damon followed with a sacrifice fly to knot the game up at three.

The Beavers scored three in the bottom of the 4th to take the lead for good. The Beavers loaded the bases with nobody out after a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. Coombs hit a grounder to 2nd base that could have been a double play ball but the Coombs beat out the throw to first as Montembeau came in to score the 4th run of the game. The return throw squibbed away from the first baseman and Meader made a heads up run on the base paths to score all the way from 2nd to make it a 5-3 game.

Late in the inning, Parsell stayed hot, ripping a single to center field to bring in Coombs and make it 6-3.

The Beavers tacked on an important insurance run in the bottom of the 5th when Meader picked up another RBI knock, ripping a double to center field to make it 7-3.

Justin Hernandez came in to score on a wild pitch, Damon delivered an RBI single and Blake scored on a walk in a hectic top of the 6th inning to pull the Blazers back with one.

Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) delivered a clutch two-out, two-RBI single up the middle to score Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) and Parsell to put the Beavers up three heading to the top of the 7th.

The Blazers brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the 7th but Beavers closer Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) closed the door to help the Beaver pick up their first win of the season.

Game Two

The Blazers opened game two in a hurry as Jayco Pena ripped a two-RBI double down the left field line just four batters into the game. Pena came in to score on an error to give MCLA a 3-0 lead after one.

Parsell led off the top of the 2nd with a deep drive to center field that was dropped allowing him to move up to 3rd base on the play. Parsell came into score on a wild pitch. The Beavers then loaded the bases with one out as Pruett and Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) hit back to back singles and Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine) drew a walk. Meader picked up his 3rd RBI of the day to make it 3-2.

Hernandez tacked on an RBI double in the bottom of the 2nd to extend the Blazers lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the 2nd inning.

Pruett had his 2nd two-RBI hit of the day, delivering a single to right to bring in Sargent and Parsell and knot the game up at four. Tibbitts brought in Peterson in the next at-bat to give Farmington their first lead of game two.

Pena led off the bottom of the 3rd inning with a solo home run to left center to knot the game up at five once again.

Farmington broke the tie once again as Peterson delivered a two-RBI single after the Beavers loaded the bases with one out.

Hernandez cut the Beavers two-run lead in half in the bottom of the 5th by blasting a solo home run of his own.

The Blazers were able to keep the Beavers scoreless in the top of the 6th and take a lead in the bottom half. Brady Hamel delivered an RBI double to bring in Jacob Morren who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Hernandez broke up the tie with an RBI single with nobody out. With nobody out and the bases still loaded, Bloch was able to strike out a pair and get a weak infield fly to get out of additional trouble.

After two quick outs, Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) delivered a single up the middle. Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) pinch ran for Marquis and came in to score on a clutch two-out double from Meader from the nine hole.

Bloch continued to dominate on the mound, shutting down the Blazers in the bottom of the 7th to send the game into extra innings.

Like deja vú from game one, Pruett delivered a clutch two-out single to bring in a pair of runs. This time it gave the Beavers a 10-8 lead. Bloch slammed the door shut in the bottom of the 8th and the Beavers swept the Blazers to secure their first two wins of the season.

Pruett went 3-4 with four RBIs to lead the offensive charge for the Beavers. Sargent and Parsell each had a pair of hits while Peterson and Meader each drove in a pair. Bloch picked up the win, going three innings of scoreless relief and striking out four.

Hernandez led the Blazers going 4-5 with three RBIs. Hamel and Pena each went 2-4. Pena finished with three RBIs.
