DAVENPORT, Florida - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team could not get anything going on Sunday in a doubleheader against St. Scholastica at day two of the RussMatt Invitational for the Beavers.
Game One
The Saints scored five runs with two outs in the 1st inning to take a commanding lead early. The Saints loaded the bases as Jake Schelonka and Adam Braun drew one out walks and Cody Horon was hit by a pitch. Beavers starting pitcher Ky Morris (East Wenatchee, Wash.) appeared to get out of the inning without issue getting Finley Spicer to hit a line drive directly at 3rd baseman Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) who caught the ball and dove to tag the base with his glove attempting to double the runner off 3rd base. Parsell appeared to beat the runner to the bag but the umpire ruled him safe and the inning continued.
Kyle Oswald and Alex Haapajoki each tallied two RBI singles to highlight the Saints' rally.
The Beaver cut into the deficit in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) drove in Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, Maine) with an RBI single to left center. Montembeau led off the inning with a hard line drive single to right field.
Morris kept the Saints scoreless until the top of the 4th inning when St. Scholastica cracked the game wide open with nine runs on seven hits. Schelonka delivered a pair of big blows in the inning, including a two-run double and a bases clearing triple, recording five RBIs in the 4th inning alone.
Haapajoki delivered an RBI triple in the 6th to make it a 15-1 game.
The Beavers were able to get two runs back in the bottom of the 7th when Coombs delivered a two-RBI single.
The Beavers scattered seven hits, Coombs was the only Beaver to record multiple hits, finishing the game 2-4 with three RBIs. Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) added a double for Farmington.
Schelonka, Haapajoki, Oswald and Ryan Garlick each had two hits to lead the Saints. Schelonka finished with five RBIs, Haapajoki tallied four, and Oswald added three.
Matt Juza picked the win up on the mound for the Saints, pitching six innings and striking out ten.
Game Two
Game two was not much different for the Beavers as the Saints were able to jump out early and coast to the doubleheader sweep.
After the Saints tallied a single run in the 1st inning, they tallied six in the 2nd, four in the 3rd, four in the 4th, and single run in the 5th en route to a 15-0 victory.
In the six run 2nd inning, Mitchell Novak drove in a pair with a single to left and Levi Stubbles ripped a two-run double to highlight the inning for the Saints. Sam Shopbell added an RBI ground-rule double to deep left and Jack Tiemann added a sacrifice fly to help St. Scholastica opened up a 7-0 lead.
Schelonka added a two-RBI double to left field in the top of the 3rd and the Saints continued to roll, opening up a 11-run lead.
Stubbles added another two-RBI double in the 4th inning and Joe Udd tacked on an RBI single in the 5th to open up a 15-0 lead.
Stubble led the Saints going 3-3 with five RBIs while Novak added two hits and three RBIs. Jacob Worley went four scoreless innings, striking out six to pick up his first win of the season.
The Beavers offense was pretty quiet in game two, Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.), Coombs and Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) each recorded singles.
The Saints improved to 5-1 after the doubleheader while the Beavers dropped to 2-5.
