Beavers Split Doubleheader with Salem State and Principia

DAVENPORT, Florida - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team split a doubleheader on Tuesday against Salem State and Principia at the RussMatt Invitational.

Game One

The two starting pitchers, Chris Albert (Bradley, Maine) for the Beavers and Brock Pare for the Vikings were in complete control on the hill, keeping opponents off balance all afternoon. Albert went the first six innings for the Beavers, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out four and walking five. Pare also threw six innings, giving up just two hits and two runs but only one of them was earned. Pare also struck out four and walked four.

Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) led off the game with a first pitch single to right field to give the Beavers some early life. Two batters later, Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) laced a ball to deep center field that Bloch thought was going to get down as he took off on contact and was around 2nd base by the time he realized the ball had been caught and had to head back to 1st. The relay throw was in time and the Beavers early threat was erased.

Salem State had four runners reach base in the bottom of the 2nd, two of them were erased on a double play ball but they still had an opportunity with the bases loaded and two outs. Albert was able to escape trouble by getting Mark Smith to fly out to left.

The Beavers cracked the scoreboard in the top of the 4th inning as Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine), Sargent, and Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) all drew consecutive one-out walks to load the bases. Pruett came into score on a wild pitch and Sargent came into score when Sam Peterson (Berwick, Maine) reached base via error giving the Beavers a 2-0 lead through three and a half innings.

Salem quickly got a run back in the bottom of the 4th when they also loaded the bases with one out after a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. Smith delivered a sac fly to deep right to cut the lead in half. Albert was able to squander further damage, getting Antonio Belgrove to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Albert found himself in trouble once again in the bottom of the 5th after walking the lead off batter and giving up a double to Owen Duggan to give the Vikings 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. But for the third time in the game Albert was able to escape trouble, inducing a pair of ground balls with the infield in to hold the runners where they were and getting a third ground ball to end the inning.

The Beavers threatened in the top of the 6th as Bloch and Pruett each reached to open the inning but were left right where they were.

The 7th and 8th innings were relatively quiet with minimal traffic on the bases. The Vikings got their bats going in the bottom of the 9th off Bloch, who is the Beavers closer. Smith led off the inning with a home run to right field to knot the game up at two. After Bloch got Belgrove to strikeout swinging, Edward Field ripped a single up the middle. Bloch retired Duggan for the 2nd out of the inning but surrendered a two-out hit to TJ Beninati to give the Vikings 1st and 3rd with two-outs. The next batter was Yabdriel Gonzalez who hit a line drive single past the diving Pruett at shortstop to walk-off the Beavers, 3-2.

Bloch went 2-4 to lead the Beavers while Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) and Peterson also recorded hits. Smith went 1-3 with the big home run and a pair of RBIs for the Vikings. Gonzalez and Beninati each went 2-5 in the ballgame.

Game Two

The second game of the day was the polar opposite of game one as the two teams combined for 28 runs as the Beavers took game two, 17-11. After a scoreless first inning, the panthers opened up the scoring as Gavin Matchell crossed the plate on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a single.

In the bottom half of the 2nd inning, Parsell led off with a walk and came into score after an error by the Panther catcher Ryan D'Amico.

Matchell helped the Panthers regain the lead in the top of the third, delivering an RBI triple to right. Principia continued to roll in the top of the 4th inning as D'Amico unloaded the bases with a two-out three-RBI triple and Kailis Mayo pitched in with an RBI single.

The Beavers cut into the lead in the bottom half of the 4th, quickly loading the bases as Parsell reached via error to open the inning and Coombs and Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) hit back-to-back singles. Ike Wrigley (Farmington, Maine) followed with a bases clearing triple to make it a 6-4 game through four innings.

The Beavers grabbed their first lead of the game in the bottom of the 5th, scoring five runs on just two hits. Marquis and Wrigley delivered consecutive singles to knot the game up at six. The Beavers then loaded the bases with two outs when Jayden Meader (Farmington, Maine) hit a ground ball back to the mound. The Panthers pitcher threw the ball away and all three runs came into score to give the Beavers a 9-6 lead.

Matchell continued his hot day with a three-run home run in the top of the 6th, knotting the game back up at nine apiece.

The seesaw battle continued in the bottom of the 6th when Coombs delivered a two-RBI single and Marquis brought Coombs in with an RBI groundout.

After Principia tacked on a run in the top of the 7th, Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) delivered a two-RBI double to deep left, extending the Beavers lead to 14-10.

Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine) added a two-RBI double in the bottom of the 8th while Meader tacked on an RBI double of his own.

Coombs, Marquis, Wrigley, and Meader all recorded multi-hit games for the Beavers. Coombs went 3-4 with four runs scored, Marquis went 3-5 three runs scored and two RBIs, Wrigley went 2-4 with four RBIS, and Meader went 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season going six innings, giving up six earned and striking out four.
