Beavers End Trip with Doubleheader Split with Lakeland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Florida - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team finished off their Florida road trip with a doubleheader split with Lakeland University. The Beavers escaped with an 8-7 victory in game one before surrendering a 14-9 setback in game two.

Game One

The Beavers got on the board quickly, scoring the first run of the game in the top of the first inning when Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) drove in Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) with an RBI single into left field after Bloch had roped a one-out double.

The Beavers offense kept rolling in the top of the 3rd. Bloch reached on an error and Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) followed with a one-out double to left field to give the Beavers runners at 2nd and 3rd. The double for Sargent was his 100th career hit. Parsell followed with his second RBI of the game, delivering a sacrifice fly to left. Two batters later was Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) who laced a two-RBI double down the line in right field bringing in Sargent and Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) who had singled a batter before. Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) followed with an RBI single to left and was thrown out trying to advance on the throw.

Beavers starting pitcher Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) cruised through the first two innings but found himself in trouble after the first two hitters of the inning reached on walks. OakLee Spens delivered an RBI single and Zak Keegan picked up an RBI groundout as Harriman was able to limit the damage and keep the Beaver ahead, 5-2 after three innings.

Harriman found himself in more trouble in the fourth inning, giving up an RBI double to Kellen Hodges to make it a 5-3 lead. Chris Day then reached on an error and Spens walked to load the bases with two outs and force Harriman out of the game. Logan Holcomb (Hebron, Conn.) took over for Harriman and walked the first batter he faced to bring in a run and make it a 5-4 game. Holcomb then induced a ground ball in the next at bat to finish out the inning.

Tibbitts hit a one-out triple in the top of the 6th inning and came into score on an RBI pinch-hit groundout from Sam Peterson (Berwick, Maine).

The Muskies tied the game up in the bottom of the 6th on an RBI groundout from Tucker Gegenfurtner and a pinch hit RBI single from Dylan Costello.

The Beavers regained the lead in the top of the 7th inning as Parsell delivered another SAC fly and Bloch came in to score three at bats later on an error by the 1st baseman on a pick off attempt to help the Beaver take a 8-6 lead into the bottom of the 7th.

Day picked up a sacrifice fly in the 7th to make it a one-run game but Ky Morris (East Wenatchee, Wash.) closed the door on any further damage to give the Beavers an 8-7 win.

Game Two

The Muskies cracked the scoreboard first, scoring a run in the top of the 2nd inning without recording a base hit.

The lead did not last long as the Beavers put up a huge seven-run inning in the bottom half of the inning to open up a huge 7-1 lead. Bloch drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game up at one. The next batter was Sargent who delivered a two-RBI single up the middle to give the Beavers a lead. Parsell and Coombs hit back-to-back doubles to bring in three more runs while Pruett recorded a single to bring in Coombs for the seventh run of the inning

Beavers starting pitcher Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) was rolling on the mound through the first four innings, giving up no hits and just two walks. But he was forced to leave in the top of the 5th with an injury. The wheels began to fall off for the Beavers after Goschke left. The first three runs scored via walk, hit by pitch, and a wild pitch. Nathan Walter delivered an RBI single, Gegenfurter hit a SAC fly, and Landon Mani came through with an RBI single of his own to give the Muskies an 8-7 lead through four and a half.

Bloch delivered with an RBI single in the bottom of the 5th to knot the game up at eight.

The Muskies wasted no time regaining the lead as Zak Keegan drove in a run with an RBI single and Gegenfurter delivered another SAC fly to give the Muskies a 10-8 lead.

In the bottom of the 6th, Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine) hit an RBI single to left to bring in Pruett and cut the Beaver deficit in half at 10-9.

Hanging onto a one-run lead in the top of the 7th, the Muskies tacked on four runs on a two-RBI single from Day and an RBI groundout from Keegan where Walter also came into score as the throw got away to make it 14-9.

Sargent recorded a single in the bottom of the 7th but the Beavers couldn't get anything more in dropping the second game of the doubleheader.
