Falcons Upend Beavers in Both Ends of Doubleheader

LYNN, Massachusetts - In their return to New England after playing eight games in Central Florida a week ago, the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team dropped both ends of Sunday's doubleheader with Fisher College. The Beavers dropped game one, 10-8 and fell in game two, 3-2 in eight innings.

Game One

Junior Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) got the start on the mound in game one for the Beavers. Harriman found himself in trouble in the bottom of the 2nd after allowing Miguel Torres to single and then hit Ruben Rodriguez with a pitch with one away to give the Falcons runners at 1st and 2nd. After a wild pitch moved the runners up to 2nd and 3rd, Harriman got Alejandro Villar to pop out for the 2nd out of the inning. But a wild pitch and an error to extend the inning allowed both runs to score and give Fisher a 2-0 lead after two.

Torres delivered a two-run double to right in the bottom of the 3rd to double the Falcon lead up to 4-0.

The Beavers' offense was held silent for the first four innings, but that all changed in the top of the 5th. Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine), Jayden Meader (Farmington, Maine), and Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) delivered three consecutive singles to lead off the inning and load the bases for Farmington. After Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) lined out for the first out of the inning, Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) singled to left to bring in Lewis. Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) doubled down the line in right to bring home Meader and Marquis to make it a 4-3 game.

Parsell's double chased Falcon's starting pitcher Jonathan Toro Mesa from the ball game. Esteban Santos-Fuentes took over for Mesa and was quickly met by Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) who singles to right to score Sargent and tie the game up at four.

After Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with just one out, Spencer Monroe took over on the mound for Santos-Fuentes. The first batter he faced was Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) who grounded into a 5-3 double play to end the inning and keep the score tied.

Harriman found himself in trouble to start the 5th allowing two singles and a 3rd hitter to reach via error to quickly load the bases. With the bases loaded and nobody out in the 5th, Chris Albert (Bradley, Maine) took over for Harriman on the mound.

An RBI single from Emanuel Rosado, a two-RBI single from Rodriguez, and a two-RBI double from Armando Torres broke the game open in the bottom of the 5th as the Falcons took a 10-4 lead.

After a pair of errors and a walk loaded the bases for the Beavers with nobody out in the 6th, Bloch drew a walk and Sargent delivered a bases clearing double to pull the Beavers back within two. But the Beavers were unable to deliver another timely hit and trailed 10-8 after five and a half.

Tj Dorn (Westbrook, Maine) delivered a scoreless 6th inning and the Beavers went down in order in the 7th, dropping game one to the Falcons.

Game Two

After game one was an offensive battle, game two was quite the opposite as both starting pitchers had things rolling. The Beavers struck first quickly however, as Marquis and Bloch led off the game with back-to-back singles to give the Beavers runners at the corners right away. Sargent grounded into a double play but Marquis came into score to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead.

Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) was spectacular on the bump in game two. Goschke went six innings, giving up four hits, one run, and striking out six.

The Beavers tacked on a run in the 4th as Sargent led off with a walk, moved over to 2nd on a SAC bunt from Parsell, and came in to score on a two-out single from Pruett.

Goschke allowed just one hit through the first five innings, keeping the Falcons off the scoreboard. But Goschke began to tire in the bottom of the 6th. Armando Torres led off with a single and Jeremy Renta delivered a one-out double to give the Falcons two runners in scoring position. Michael Wright followed with a SAC fly to make it a 2-1 ballgame. After Miguel Torres walked, Goschke got Vance Serrano to strikeout swinging to end the threat.

After the Beavers went in order in the top of the 7th, Bloch took over on the mound for Goschke to start the bottom half of the inning. Jose Aybar led off with a bunt single and moved over to 2nd on a wild pitch. Armando Torres delivered a clutch one-out, game-tying, RBI single after Bloch had struck out Fernando Verde. Bloch settled in and got Jatnier Torres and Renta to ground out and send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the 8th, Parsell and Coombs drew two-out walks but Pruett grounded out to end the inning.

Bloch stayed on the mound in the bottom of the 8th. Wright doubled to left to lead off the inning and put the winning run in scoring position right away. Rosado dropped down a SAC bunt to move Wright over to 3rd with just one away. Bloch induced a ground ball with the infield drawn in to record the 2nd out of the inning. The next batter was Serrano who ripped a double past the diving Parsell to give Fisher the walk-off victory.
