Farmington Drops NAC Opening Doubleheader at Lesley

LEXINGTON, Massachusetts - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team could not keep pace with the explosive Lesley University offense in the Beavers' North Atlantic Conference (NAC) season opening doubleheader. The Lynx took game one, 11-2 and went on to win game two, 17-3.

Game One

The Lynx got to Beavers starter Ky Morris (East Wenatchee, Wash.) early in the bottom of the 1st inning, chasing him from the ballgame after just a third of an inning. Morris found himself in hot water quickly, hitting the first batter of the game and then walking the second. Lesley three-hole hitter James Brandon blasted a three-run home run to left to put the Lynx up 3-0 just three hitters into the game.

The line kept moving for the Lynx as Owen Kalagher followed the Brandon home run with a single, stole 2nd base, moved over to 3rd on a Cal Caruso single, and scored on a well executed 1st and 3rd double steal. Morris walked and hit another batter to signal the end of his day. Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) entered the game with the bases loaded and worked out of further damage, getting a strike out and a fly out to end the inning.

Brandon stayed hot in the bottom of the 2nd, ripping an RBI double to right to open up a 5-0 lead for the Lynx.

The Lesley offense put up a three spot in the bottom of the 5th inning. Sam Wrigley (Farmington, Maine), who had taken over on the mound for Tuttle in the 3rd inning, was cruising to open the inning, striking out the first two batters he faced. But a Kevin Dorsey single and a walk put the Lynx back in business. Justin Dennett roped a double to left, scoring Dorsey and Ian Dempsey, opening up a 7-0 lead, and chasing Wrigley from the game.

Dennett scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.

After being held scoreless for the first five innings of the game, Farmington's offense broke through in the top of the 6th. Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) singled to start the rally and Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) drew a two-out walk giving the Beavers the most traffic on the bases that they had in the game. Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) made the most of the opportunity, tripling to right center, driving in two to make it an 8-2 game.

Lesley responded with three in the bottom half of the 6th to put the game away. Colby Jacobs and Dorsey delivered RBI knocks in the inning for the Lynx.

Game Two

The Lynx picked up right where they left off, scoring 17 runs en route to the 17-3 victory in game two. Lesley quickly loaded the bases in the top of the 1st, scoring two in the inning. The first came on a SAC fly from Kalagher. The second run scored on an error.

Caden Schott led off the bottom of the 3rd inning with a single up the middle and came around to score on an RBI double from Brandon who continued to pound the baseball.

Lesley's offense stayed red hot, scoring four more in the bottom of the 4th to open up a 7-0 lead. Caruso opened the inning with a triple and came into score on a Dylan Mills single. Beavers starting pitcher Chris Albert (Bradley, Maine) began to lose the strike zone, walking four straight as two more runs scored.

The Beavers offense was quiet once again for most of the game, but started to rally in the 6th. Jayden Meader (Farmington, Maine) and Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) opened the inning with back-to-back singles and Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) drew a one-out walk to lead the bases for the Beavers. Parsell was hit by a pitch and Coombs drew a walk with the bases loaded, making it an 8-2 game through five and a half.

Sargent delivered an RBI single in the 7th, scoring Meader who had singled earlier in the inning.

Lesley's offense put an end to any chance the Beavers had of coming back, putting four runs up in each the 7th and the 8th innings. Jacobs delivered a bases clearing double, advanced to third on the throw and scored on an error to make it a 13-3 game through seven. Brandon delivered the explanation point in the 8th, hitting his second home run of the day. This time, a two-run shot to left.

Marquis and Meader led the Beavers at the dish in game two. Marquis went 3-4 with a walk and a run scored while Meader finished 2-4 with two runs scored.

Lesley pounded out 14 hits, including six for extra bases, and drew 12 walks. Brandon led the way, finishing 3-4 with four RBIs, two runs scored, and two walks. Jacobs went 2-5 with four RBIs and Kalagher finished 2-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Roy Lenhard picked up the win on the mound, going 6.1 innings giving up three runs and striking out six.
