Lesley Completes Series Sweep over Beavers

LEXINGTON, Mass. - Lesley University's pitching continued to shut down the University of Maine at Farmington's bats, topping the Beavers 5-1 and 6-0 in today's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) battle. With the two victories, the Lynx completed the series sweep of Farmington.

Game One

After a scoreless inning and a half to start the game, Lesley grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd. Colby Jacobs reached base on an error to lead off the inning and moved over to 2nd on a ground out. Cal Caruso singled to center, scoring Jacobs and giving the Lynx a 1-0 lead.

The Beavers were held hitless through three innings, but consecutive doubles from Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) and Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) gave the Beavers their first two hits of the game and plated their first run, knotting the game up at one.

Beavers starting pitcher Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) had his stuff working on the mound, but found himself in a slight jam in the bottom of the 4th. Caruso ripped a one out single and Kevin Dorsey followed with a single of his own, setting up a 1st and 3rd opportunity for the Lynx. After Dorsey stole 2nd, Harriman induced a Ian Dempsey ground ball to 3rd. Parsell fielded the ball cleanly and threw Caruso out at home trying to score for the 2nd out of the inning. Justin Dennett didn't let the opportunity go to waste, hitting a clutch two-run double to left center to open up a 3-1 lead.

Dempsey delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th and Dennett hit a SAC fly to center to give the Lynx a pair of needed insurance runs.

Farmington's offense was fairly quiet after the Parsell and Coombs doubles in the 4th. Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) and Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) recorded singles in the 5th and 6th inning, but neither advanced beyond 2nd base.

Harriman went 5.1 innings, scattering eight hits, giving up five runs, and striking out one. Logan Watts pitched the complete game, giving up just four hits and striking out eight to earn his 3rd victory of the season.

Game Two

Game two was more of the same as this time Jacob Nemergut pitched a complete game shutout, surrendering just three hits, walking none, and striking out seven to pick up the win.

Lesley's offense produced just seven hits, but four of them went for extra bases as the Lynx pushed across six runs en route to their 4th victory of the weekend.

Lesley's offense mustered three runs in the bottom of the 2nd, two of them coming on a two-run shot off the bat of Boone Scherer. Dennett doubled home Adam Budorick to open up a 3-0 lead through two innings.

Lesley got to Beavers starting pitcher Aaron Goschke (Windham, Maine) for a second time, scoring two runs on one hit in the 4th. Budorick doubled to score Caruso, who had led off the inning with a walk. Dennett added an RBI on a SAC Fly to open up a 5-0 lead.

Dorsey delivered a two-out bases loaded single in the bottom of the 5th to extend the lead to 6-0.

Offensively, the Beavers just could not get anything going. Paul Vachon (Brookline, N.H.) and Sargent each doubled but advanced no further. Farmington threatened to score in the 7th. Parsell singled and Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to put some traffic on bases for the Beavers. After an error allowed Parsell and Greyson Bell (Las Vegas, Nevada), who pinch ran for Bloch to advance to 2nd and 3rd, Nemergut got Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) to ground out to end the ball game.

Following the two losses the Beavers dropped to 4-17 on the season.
