Beavers Split with Lyndon on Day Two of Weekend Series

BANGOR, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team finished off the weekend splitting Sunday's doubleheader to take three out of four from VTSU Lyndon. Both games today were pitchers duels with Lyndon topping the Beavers, 2-1 in game one. The Beavers responded with a 5-3 victory in game two.

Game One

The Beavers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 1st as Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) drove delivered an RBI single down the line in left field to score Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) who had walked earlier in the inning and moved over to 2nd on a wild pitch.

Lyndon scored a pair in the 3rd inning off Beavers starter Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.). Brandon Fernandez reached base on an error to lead off the inning and moved over to 2nd on a SAC bunt from TJ Santaw. Evan Duncan followed with a huge RBI triple to right, knotting the game up at one. Matt Gonyeau followed with an RBI single to give Lyndon the 2-1 advantage. Bloch gave up singles to Ryan Alt and Matt Doherty later in the inning to load the bases, but beared down to get Dale Ostermann to ground out to end the threat.

The two runs from Lyndon were the last two runs to score in the game. The Beavers were only able to muster a single in the bottom of the 4th and another one in the bottom of the 5th and could not get a runner past 2nd base for the remainder of the game.

Lyndon starting pitcher Carlos Rodriguez was masterful on the mound, hurling a complete game, allowing just three hits and striking out six to pick up his first win of the season. For the Beavers, Bloch battled through seven innings, scattering seven hits and striking out two.

Gonyeau went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI to pace the Hornets offensively.

Game Two

The Beavers responded in game two, finishing the weekend off in style with the 5-3 victory.

The two teams were held scoreless through the first two and a half innings before the Beavers put a four-spot on the board in the bottom of the 3rd.

Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine) reached base via error to lead off the inning and start the rally for Farmington. Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) delivered an RBI single to right to score Lewis and break the scoreless tie. Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) and Coombs followed with bunt singles to load the bases for Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine). Sargent delivered a SAC fly to plate Pruett and Parsell followed with a two-run double down the line in left to give Farmington a 4-0 lead.

Chris Albert (Bradley, Maine) was dealing on the mound for Farmington through the first four innings. Albert gave up just three hits and struck out three through the first four. Lyndon got to Albert a little to open the 5th. Nolan Barber led off the inning with a walk and moved over to 2nd on a SAC bunt. After Fernandez reached on an error, the Hornets had runners at the corners with just one away. A well executed first and third steal attempt allowed Barber to sneak in and get Lyndon on the board.

Sargent tripled to deep left in the bottom of the 5th and later scored on a Parsell SAC fly to make it a 5-1 ball game.

After a scoreless 6th, Albert began to labor in the top of the 7th. Barber led off the inning with a double and Fernandez ripped an infield single to give the Hornets runners at 1st and 3rd with one out. Fernandez was caught stealing for the 2nd out of the inning. Santaw kept the inning alive with a single of his own, scoring Barber, and chasing Albert from the game. Logan Holcomb (Hebron, Conn.) came on in relief for Albert. The first batter he faced was Duncan, who laced a single to center field, scoring Santaw who had moved into scoring possession after stealing 2nd base. Holcomb got Gonyeau to ground out to 3rd to end the inning and keep it a 5-3 game.

Marquis and Coombs led off the 7th with back-to-back singles but a Sargent double play thwarted the Beavers rally opportunity.

Kyle Sawyer (Saco, Maine) pitched the 8th and 9th scoreless to pick up his first collegiate save.

Marquis and Coombs each went 2-for-4 with a run scored to pace the Beavers offensively. Parsell went 1-for-3 with three RBIs out of the clean up spot. Albert picked up the win, going 6.2 innings, scattering seven hits and striking out four.

Santaw, Duncan, Alt, and Barber each had two hits for the Hornets.
