Monks Take Two From Beavers

STANDISH, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team dropped both ends of Thursday's non-conference doubleheader, falling to Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 3-1 and 9-4.

Game One

Game one was a pitcher's duel as neither offense could get too much rolling but the Monks put together enough timely hitting to get past the Beavers.

Farmington loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the 1st but were unable to get the timely hit and stranded the bases loaded.

The Beavers once again loaded the bases, doing so with one out in the top of the 3rd. Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) led off the inning with a single and Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) and Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) followed with walks, bringing Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) to the plate. Bloch delivered an important single to score Marquis and give the Beavers a one-run lead. After Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, Maine) struck out swinging, Coombs was caught trying to steal home to end the inning.

The Monks got to first-year starter Gabe Philbrick (Florence, Mont.) in the bottom of the 3rd. Jared Wilhelm ripped a lead-off home run to quickly tie the game up at one. The Monks offense continued to have good at-bats, loading the bases with just one away for Luke Doughty. Doughty came through with the timely hit the Monks needed, a single through the left side to score a pair and open up a 3-1 Monks lead.

Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) took over for Philbrick and got Michael Richards to line into a double play to end any further threat.

The Beavers loaded the bases for the third time in four innings in the 4th, but once again could not get the big hit they needed. Coombs lined into a double play to end the inning.

The Beavers continued to put traffic on the bases, loading the bases once again in the 5th. This time Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) grounded into an inning ending double play.

The Monks scattered 11 hits in the game. Tuttle, Kyle Sawyer (Saco, Maine), and TJ Dorn (Westbrook, Maine) combined to pitch 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. Josh Wiener picked up the win for the Monks. Wieners pitched 3.1 innings, striking out five. Logan Dee picked up the save, going 2.2 innings scoreless and striking out three.

Game Two

The Beavers quickly loaded the bases once again to open up game two on a pair of singles from Coombs and Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) and a hit by pitch to Parsell. Bloch drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Coombs and stake the Beavers to the early 1-0 lead.

The Monks responded quickly as Matt Elwell led off the bottom of the 1st with a walk and came in to score on an RBI single from Wilhelm.

Jack Moltenbrey led off the bottom of the 3rd with a single, stole 2nd and scored on an error to give the Monks a 2-1 lead through three innings.

Game two was much of the same story for the Beavers. Once again the Beavers loaded the bases in the 4th inning, but just could not get the hit that they needed, stranding the bases loaded.

The Beavers started to struggle to find the strike zone in the bottom of the 5th. The Monks drew five walks and tallied three hits, turning them into four runs to open up a 6-1 lead. Wilhem recorded an RBI single and three runs scored on passed balls or wild pitches to extend the Monks lead.

An RBI single from Ryan Kastle and a two-run double from Morgan Doughty extended SJC's lead to 9-1 through six innings.

The Beaver offense finally got the hits they needed in the top of the 7th, but the deficit was too much to overcome. Sargent, Bloch, and Sam Peterson (South Berwick, Maine) recorded three straight RBI singles to make it a 9-4 game.

UP NEXT

The Beavers travel to Husson University this weekend for a four-game set with the Eagles. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM.
