Farmington’s Offense Stymied by Husson, Drop Both Ends of the Doubleheader

BANGOR, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team could not get much offense going at all on Sunday afternoon, plating just one run in 14 innings to drop both ends of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader with Husson University. The Eagles topped the Beavers 10-1 in game one and went on to win game two 5-0.

Game One

The Eagles offense got rolling quickly in game one, posting eight runs in the first two innings of play to all but put the game away early.

The Beavers did find the scoreboard first however, scoring right away in the top of the 1st inning. Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) led off the game with a single to center field. Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) followed with a walk to put the Beavers in business early. After a fly ball moved Marquis over to 3rd, Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Marquis to score and stake the Beavers to a 1-0 lead after a half inning.

Jackson Curtis tied the game up in the bottom half of the first, driving a single through the left side to score Hunter Curtis. Keegan Cyr scored on a wild pitch and Matt Holmes plated Akira Warren on a single of his own to put Husson up 3-1 after one.

The Eagles kept things rolling in the bottom half of the 2nd inning, scoring five more runs to make it an 8-1 ball game. Warren plated the first run with a bases loaded walk. Holmes recorded his 2nd RBI knock in as many innings and Tanner Evans delivered the big blow, a bases clearing triple to break the game open.

Husson added a single run in each of the 5th and 6th innings on an RBI double from Hunter Curtis in the 5th and an RBI double from Holmes in the 6th.

The Eagles knocked out 11 hits in the ball game. Holmes led the way going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Hunter and Jackson Curtis each recorded multi-hit games for the Eagles. Alex Smith picked up the victory on the mound, going the first six innings surrendering just two hits and striking out three.

After the 1st inning, the Beaver offense was quiet. Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) recorded the Beavers only other hit in the game, a single in the top of the 4th.

Game Two

Matt Wallingford, Zain Fitzsimmons, Ryan Penney, and Ryan Robb combined to throw the seven inning shutout, surrendering just one hit and two walks combined en route to the Eagles 5-0 victory.

The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the 1st after loading the bases with two outs. Jack Cote drew a two-out bases loaded walk to score Hunter Curtis and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 2nd Hunter Curtis continued to stay hot at the plate, hitting an RBI single to score Ryne Rametta. Curtis scored later in the inning on an RBI single from Warren as the Eagles opened up a three-run lead.

Curtis was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the 4th and scored on a throwing error after a single from Cyr. Cyr came around to score later in the inning on an RBI single from Holmes.

Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) took the hard fought loss, going 3.1 innings, giving up six hits and five runs. Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) and Kyle Sawyer (Saco, Maine) combined to throw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, Maine) recorded the lone hit in the game for Farmington.
