Early Defensive Struggles Come Back to Bite Beavers in Loss to Bates

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Single errors in the 3rd and 4th innings resulted in four Bates runs as the Bobcats topped the University of Maine at Farmington in a non-conference battle on Tuesday afternoon. Due to unplayable field conditions at both institutions, the game was played at Bowdoin College.

The Beavers struck first in the top of the 2nd. Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) led off the inning with a double to the opposite field, stole 3rd, and came across to score on an RBI groundout from Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine).

The Bobcats threatened to score in the bottom half of the inning as Ben Genser led off with a double and advanced to third on a ground out. After Gibby Sullivan walked and stole second, the Bobcats were in business with runners at 2nd and 3rd with one away. Dylan Azcárate lifted a ball to straight away right field that appeared to be deep enough to score Genser but Beaver right fielder Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) caught the flyball and threw and absolute seed right on the money to Lewis who tagged out Genser for the inning ending double play.

Bates did get on the scoreboard and tied the game up in the bottom half of the 3rd. Jack Brennan reached 2nd on a dropped fly ball in left field and scored on a Chris Cimino RBI single.

Bates hung a three spot on the board in the bottom of the 4th. Genser led off the inning with an infield single, stole 2nd and came across to score on a throwing error. Azcárate delivered an RBI single, scoring Jankowski who had reached on the error earlier in the inning. Brennan followed with an RBI double to bring in Azcárate and make it 4-1 game through four innings.

After being held scoreless after the 2nd inning, Farmington had their best opportunity to get back on the scoreboard, loading the bases in the top of the 6th. Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) singled, Coombs walked, and Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs for Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, Maine). Montembeau drew a walk that allowed Parsell to score and made it a 4-2 ball game.

Brandon Biggane pushed the Bobcats ahead by four, delivering a two-run home run in the bottom of 7th.

Azcárate delivered an RBI double and Henry Prince ripped an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th as the Bobcats extended their lead to 8-2.

Farmington did not quit, continuing to battle in the 9th. Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) was hit by a pitch and Bloch hit a one-out single to put runners on 1st and 2nd for the Beavers. The next batter was Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) who hit an RBI double to left to cut into the deficit and make it an 8-3 game. Ike Wrigley (Farmington, Maine), who pinch ran for Bloch, scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.

The loss for the Beavers drops them to 4-13 on the season. Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) took the hard-fought loss, going four innings, giving up four unearned runs. Sargent recorded a pair of hits to lead the Beavers offensively.

Max Dio picked up the win for the Bobcats, throwing 2.2 innings of relief. Dio gave up just one run and struck out one. Genser went 4-5 with a run scored to lead Bates' offense. Azcárate finished 2-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored while Cimino was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
