Beavers Fall to New England College in Day Two at NEC Classic

HENNIKER, NH - The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team suffered a 6-1 setback at the hands of New England College on Saturday afternoon on day two of the New England College Classic.

The Records:

Saturday marked the 2nd game of the early season for the Beavers who dropped their season opener on Friday evening to Simmons University. The loss for the Beavers dropped them to 0-2 on the season. Saturday's contest was the season opener for New England College who now sit 1-0.

How it Happened:

The opening ten minutes of the game were relatively quiet, the Pilgrims held a majority of the possession, registering two shots on net but second-year goalkeeper Ella Grant (Sturbridge, Mass.) was up to the task, turning away both shots to keep the game scoreless.

Taylor Bailey got the hosts on the scoreboard at the 10:50 mark of the opening period. Bailey inserted a penalty corner, received a pass back from Drea Chin and found the back of the cage to stake NEC to 1-0 first quarter lead.

Junior forward Abby Hanson (South Paris, Maine) scored her first goal of the season just minutes into the second quarter to knot the game up at one apiece. The goal came on a beautifully executed penalty corner. Gabby Vincentsen (Bristol, Maine) was credited with the assist on Hanson's goal.

Four minutes after Hanson tied the game, Meaghan McCamish put the Grims back in front, this time for good, scoring a goal off a dish from Adelaide Kelly. Kelly scored a goal of her own just 34 seconds later to give the Grims a two goal lead that they took into halftime.

NEC scored bookend goals in the 3rd quarter, scoring 59 seconds into the period and with 46 seconds remaining in the period to extend their lead to 5-1 after 45 minutes. Both goals were unassisted markers off the stick of Cristina Manzi.

Kelly scored her second goal of the contest in the closing moments of the 4th quarter to make it a 6-1 game and put an end to the scoring.

The Goalies:

Grant was fantastic in goal for the second day in a row, stockpiling 17 saves in the losing effort. Grant has made 33 saves in the Beavers first two games this season. Mackenzie Anderson played the first 48 minutes of the game and did not record a save to pick up the win in goal for the Grims. Amy Philbin played the final 12 minutes and recorded one save.

Team Stats:

The Grims held advantages in shots (36-2), shots on goal (23-2), and penalty corners (15-2) in grabbing the victory over the Beavers.
