SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. — The host Mount Holyoke College field hockey team took an early two-goal lead just five minutes and 38 seconds into this afternoon's match, cruising to a 5-0 victory over the visiting University of Maine at Farmington.
The Records:
Both teams entered the game seeking their first win of the season. The Beavers fell to 0-3, while the Lions improved to 1-1.
How It Happened:
Ashley Scott opened the scoring with her first goal of the season just 3:38 into the game, assisted by Scout Climie. The hosts executed a penalty corner two minutes later, with Linnea Alsted finding the back of the cage on a feed from Jayonna Montigny, doubling the Lions' lead.
The Beavers had a prime opportunity to score three minutes later when
Elizabeth Kendall's (Piscataquis, Maine) initial shot was saved by Rachel Katzenberg. The rebound fell to
Gabby Vincentsen (Bristol, Maine), whose follow-up attempt missed just wide, keeping the Beavers scoreless.
Alsted scored her second goal of the game six minutes into the second quarter, off another well-executed penalty corner. Montigny inserted the corner and found Emily Bisson, who assisted Alsted's goal.
Mount Holyoke came out strong after halftime, applying significant pressure on Beavers goalkeeper
Ella Grant (Sturbridge, Mass.). Grant made four saves in the first three and a half minutes of the half to maintain the three-goal deficit.
Montigny added her second assist of the game, finding Diane Lee for a goal at the 36:16 mark, extending the Lions' lead to 4-0. Montigny then recorded her third assist four minutes later, setting up Mackenzie Hillman for the Lions' fifth and final goal.
The Beavers attempted to rally late in the fourth quarter, earning a pair of penalty corners and getting off three shots. However, all three shots were blocked, and the Beavers were unable to score.
Team Stats:
The Lions outpaced the Beavers in shots (36-7), shots on goal (17-2), and penalty corners (6-3).
The Goalkeepers:
Grant continued her strong season, recording her third consecutive double-digit save game with 12 saves. Mount Holyoke used three goalkeepers: Rachel Katzenberg, who played the first half and made one save, Julia Merriam, who recorded a save in her 15 minutes in goal.
