Late Penalty Kick Downs Beavers in Conference Opener

WATERVILLE, Maine - Reigning North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Rookie of the Week Jack Luciano (Gorham, Maine) gave the University of Maine at Farmington a lead in the 25th minute but the Beavers were unable to maintain the advantage, falling on the road to Thomas College< 2-1="" in="" their="" 2024="" nac="">

The Records:

The Beavers fall to 1-2-1 overall in the early season and are not 0-1 in NAC play. The Terriers are 2-1-1 overall with a 2-0 record in conference play with wins over Maine Maritime Academy and now Farmington.

How it Happened:

Wednesday afternoon's game was a back-and-forth offensive battle with the teams on the attack at one another. The offensive pressure began right from kick-off as David Ivarsson got a strong shot on goal forcing sophomore goalkeeper Jackson Leach (Farmingdale, Maine) to make a save that produced a Terrier corner kick.

Farmington cracked the scoreboard first in the 25th minute. Luciano came off the bench at the 23:44 mark and instantly made his presence felt, scoring the game's first goal just 39 seconds later. Zach Chaisson (Scarborough, Maine) ripped a shot from the top left of the penalty area that appeared labeled for the upper right corner but the shot struck the crossbar and deflected directly to Luciano who headed home the rebound to give Farmington the lead.

The Beavers' lead didn't last long, just four minutes and 17 seconds as Ivarsson headed home a Joshua Joseph corner kick to tie the game up at one.

The game remained tied until the 81st minute. After a Thomas corner kick, Nasip Abdi was called for a foul inside the penalty area, awarding the Terriers a penalty kick. Joseph took the attempt and slid a shot to the bottom left corner just out of the reach of the diving Leach. The goal for Joseph wound up being the game-winner in what could turn out to be a crucial conference matchup between the teams.

Team Stats:

The game was very evenly played but Thomas held advantages in shots (17-15), shots on goal (9-6), and corner kicks (11-5).

The Goalkeepers:

Leach was phenomenal in net, making seven saves in the loss. Jamie Fischer picked up five saves for the Terriers to pick up his 2nd win of the season.
