SALEM, Mass. — The Salem State University women's soccer team, having gone scoreless in their first 180 minutes of the season, broke through with two goals in the first half to secure a 2-0 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon.
The Records:
The Beavers entered the game with a 1-0 record after a win over the University of Maine at Augusta in their season opener on Tuesday. The loss drops Farmington to 1-1 for the season. Salem improves to 1-2, earning their first victory of the year.
How It Happened:
Salem started aggressively, taking the first five shots of the game, including three within the first five minutes and fifty seconds. However, all three were off target. Beaver junior goalkeeper made a crucial save against Jenna Mitza in the 12th minute.
The Beavers earned a pair of corners in the 20th and 22nd minutes but were unable to register a shot from either opportunity, keeping the game scoreless.
Krysta Zamejtis broke the deadlock with a goal in the 24th minute, assisted by Mitza, giving Salem a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings continued their offensive pressure after the goal, registering three shots on target in the following ten minutes. Farmington's goalkeeper, Gonya, made three crucial saves to keep the game within reach.
Salem extended their lead in the 37th minute when Brenna Paquette scored an unassisted goal, her first of the season, to double the hosts' advantage heading into halftime.
Farmington controlled much of the play in the middle part of the second half but was unable to score, leaving them unable to close the gap.
Team Stats:
The Vikings outshot the Beavers 15-3, with a 10-0 advantage in the first half. Salem State also led in shots on goal (10-2) and corner kicks (5-4).
The Goalkeepers:
Gonya had a strong performance for Farmington, making several high-quality saves and finishing the game with eight. Ava Guyer recorded two saves for Salem State, earning the shutout.
