GORHAM, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team was unable to keep pace with the quick-strike offense of the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a non-conference matchup, 5-0.
The Records:
Following the loss, the Beavers fell to 7-4-1 overall, while the Huskies improved to 5-7-1.
How It Happened:
The Huskies opened the game by applying significant early pressure on senior goalkeeper Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine). In the first 18 and a half minutes of play, Southern Maine tallied nine shots, five of which forced Gonya to make saves.
In the 20th minute, Meghan Przybilla put the Huskies on the scoreboard when she muscled home a rebound off a shot from Lexi Morin. Przybilla doubled Southern Maine's lead in the 42nd minute after quick passing from Makyla Magid and Madi Sainis along the sideline freed her in the penalty area.
Gonya was phenomenal in the first half, making ten saves to keep the Beavers within striking distance as the offense struggled to find rhythm, getting outshot 19-1 in the opening 45 minutes.
Southern Maine extended its lead just 14 seconds into the second half. After a Beaver turnover, Riley Reitchel played a through ball onto the feet of Bridgette Toland, who settled it before firing a rocket over the head of the leaping Gonya and into the back of the net to make it 3-0.
The Huskies continued to press and made it 4-0 in the 65th minute. Marie Benoit took a pass from Kadin Davoren, beat one Beaver defender, and unleashed a right-footed strike that bounced off the crossbar and into the back of the net, just out of Gonya's reach.
Florence Guimont capped the scoring in the 85th minute with Southern Maine's fifth goal of the game. Davoren was credited with the assist—her second of the match.
