Men’s Track and Field Opens 2025 Outdoor Season at SNHU Invitational

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire - The University of Maine at Farmington men's track and field team opened up their 2025 outdoor track and field season in a big way as the three individuals qualified for the New England Championship, two individuals set program records, and the 4x100 meter relay team shattered to program record, taking first place in the highly competitive event amongst numerous NCAA Division II teams.

Top Beaver Performances:

Senior Justin Castaldo (Scarborough, Maine) opened his outdoor season in a similar fashion to how he ended his cross country and indoor seasons, in dominant fashion. Castaldo took second place overall, qualifying for the New England Championships in the 10,000 meters. Castaldo posted a time of 32:54.60 in the event.

First-year Owen Booker (Lisbon, Maine) set the program record and qualified for the New England Championships in the javelin, with his furthest throw measuring in at 55.51 meters. The previous record was 43.13 meters, set by Shane Hathaway in 2017. Booker advanced to the finals in the event, and placed third overall. Booker also added a sixth place finish in pole vault, clearing the 2.75 meter standard.

Senior Ben Vachon (Portland, Maine) continued his strong season, qualifying for the New England Championship and setting the new program record in long jump with a jump measured at 6.70 meters. Vachon held the previous record which was set at 6.66 meters. Vachon placed fourth overall in the event. Vachon also added a fourth place finish in high jump, clearing the 1.85 meter barrier.

The Beavers' 4x100 meter relay team posted a time of 43.01 seconds, breaking the previous record of 44.18 seconds, to claim first place. The team consisted of Nate Trussell (Berwick, Maine), Logan Burns (Islesboro, Maine), Seamus Reeve (Kittery, Maine), and Vachon.

Trussell narrowly missed out on setting a program record of his own, posting a time of 15.75 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles. The Farmington record is 15.73 seconds, held by Henry Scheff '22. Trussell did take second place overall in the event.

Junior James Riley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and sophomore Andrew LaFlamme (Nashua, N.H.) finished second and third respectively in the 3.000 meter steeplechase. Riley finished with a time of 10:24.44 while LaFlammed finished less than a second behind, earning a time of 10:25.26.

Sophomore Alex Crews (Brewer, Maine) earned a pair of top-ten finished in the discus and shot put. In the shot put, Crews finished eighth overall with his best throw being measured at 12.45 meters. In the discus, Crews placed seventh with his best throw measuring 38.34 meters.

The Beavers with travel to Springfield College next Saturday to compete in the Springfield Invitational.
