Beavers Can’t Keep Pace with Orono

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team traveled north this afternoon to take on Division I University of Maine at Orono in a non-conference game at Mahaney Diamond. The Black Bears struck early and cruised to a 17–1 victory over the Beavers.

Records:

The Beavers dropped their third straight and fell to 5–15 on the season. The Black Bears, finding their stride, have now won six consecutive games and improved to 14–20.

How It Happened:

The Orono offense batted around in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs on just two hits to open an early lead. Aidan Bardi delivered an RBI single, Payton Whitehead drew a bases-loaded walk, and Quinn Murphy added a two-run single in the inning for the Black Bears.

Farmington's offense came alive in the top of the second, cutting into the Orono advantage. Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout, and came around to score on an RBI single from Tyler Rosa (Morgan Hill, Calif.), making it a 4–1 game.

The Beavers opted for a full-staff approach, using seven different pitchers in the seven-inning game. Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) and Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) each delivered a scoreless frame in the second and fourth innings, respectively.

Maine blew the game open with six runs in both the third and fifth innings. Whitehead launched a two-run home run in the third, while Caleb Vacchiano, Myles Sargent, and Drew Reynolds contributed RBI singles. In the fifth, a two-run double by Reynolds delivered the biggest blow.

Orono used four pitchers. Vaun Larisa, Pierce Friedman, Jason Libby, and Jack Donlin combined to hold Farmington to just three hits while striking out 13. Friedman earned the win, tossing two perfect innings in relief and striking out three.

Orono's offense pounded out 13 hits, with Evan Menzel, Reynolds, Damon Gaither, and Murphy all recording multi-hit games. Menzel, Sargent, and Gaither each scored three runs. Bardi, Reynolds, and Whitehead drove in three apiece.

Rosa, Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine), and Camden Cook (Littleton, N.H.) recorded the hits for the Beavers—all singles. Cook's hit marked the first of his collegiate career.

Up Next:

The Beavers return to action tomorrow afternoon against another UMaine System opponent, traveling to Gorham to take on the University of Southern Maine. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
