Written by: Aaron Goschke '25

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team traveled south this afternoon to face the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference matchup. Despite a spirited late-game rally, the Beavers ultimately fell to the Huskies, 12–7.

Records:

The Beavers dropped their fourth straight, falling to 5–16 on the season. Southern Maine improved their record to 11-15.

How It Happened:

Southern Maine got off to a quick start, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by Peter Keblinsky's two-RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Drew Scialdone. Keblinsky added to the Huskies' advantage in the second inning with an inside-the-park home run, pushing the lead to 5–0.

The Huskies added three more runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Jack LeBlond and Connor Burgess, extending their lead to 8–0. UMaine-Farmington got on the board in the sixth inning when Paul Vachon (Brookline, N.H.) singled home Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) to make it 8–1, but Southern Maine quickly responded, scoring twice in their half of the inning to push the score to 11–1.

The Beavers continued to fight, adding a run in the seventh inning when Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, ME) crossed the plate on a fielder's choice off the bat of Ike Wrigley (Farmington, ME). Farmington then erupted for five runs in the eighth inning, taking advantage of two Huskies errors and RBI hits from Wrigley, Sargent, and Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.), narrowing the deficit to 11–7.

Southern Maine responded with an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Brisette, cementing the final score at 12–7. The Huskies pitching closed out the game with a quick ninth inning to secure the victory.

Peter Keblinsky paced the Southern Maine offense with multiple hits, including a double and home run, while driving in three runs. Sargent and Wrigley led UMaine-Farmington offensively, each delivering timely hits in the late innings.

Sophomore Gabe Philbrick (Florence, Mont.) was charged with the loss, giving up four earned in just ? of an inning. Philbrick walked three in the top of the first. Nate Burnett was credited with the win, pitching three innings in relief of Kyle Skolfield who pitched the first four innings. Skolfield gave up just two hits and kept the Beavers scoreless in his four innings of work. Burnett gave up two runs, just one earned on five hits.
