Bloch Shines in Game 1 as Beavers Split with UMPI

Written By: Aaron Goschke '25

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team split Tuesday's North Atlantic Conference doubleheader against UMaine-Presque Isle at Hippach Field for the second consecutive day. The Beavers took the opener in a tight 1-0 contest behind a complete-game shutout from Jameson Bloch, but the Owls responded with an early offensive surge in Game 2 to claim an 8-1 victory.

The Records:

Farmington moved to 9-21 overall (3-9 NAC), while UMPI now sits at 6-15 (3-11 NAC).

Game 1: UMF 1, UMPI 0

In a classic pitcher's duel, Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) was nearly untouchable, throwing a complete-game three-hit shutout to earn his first win of the season. The junior left-hander struck out six, walked two, and worked around four hit batters over 111 pitches.

The complete game shutout for Bloch is the first from a Beaver since Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) did so against VTSU Lyndon in 2022.

The game's only run came in the fifth inning when Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) reached on a bunt single and came around to score on a two-out RBI single to left from Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine).

UMF finished with five hits, while the Owls were held to just three. Jonah Baude went the distance for UMPI, taking the tough-luck loss after allowing just one run and striking out three in seven innings.

Game 2: UMPI 8, UMF 1

Presque Isle flipped the script in Game 2, exploding for eight runs over the first two innings to take immediate control. UMF starter Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) lasted just two-thirds of an inning due to injury, giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits. Hector Perez, Garrett Chadwick, Ian Michaud, and Aiden Toy all recorded RBI singles in the first inning to mount an early 4-0 lead.

The Owls added four more runs in the second, capitalizing on a wild pitch, an RBI single from Perez, an RBI groundout from Chadwick, and patient at-bats that loaded the bases. After being held scoreless in game one, the Owls built an 8-0 advantage after just two innings in game two.

Perez led the charge at the plate, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three stolen bases.

Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) provided the lone highlight for the Beavers in Game 2 with a solo home run to center field in the fourth — his fourth of the season. Jameson Bloch added a double in the sixth, but UMF was limited to just two hits overall.

Chadwick tossed a complete-game gem for UMPI, allowing only two hits, striking out four, and not issuing a single walk across 66 pitches.

Notable Performances:
  • Jameson Bloch (UMF): 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 6 K (Game 1) + 1-for-3, 2B (Game 2)
  • Ryan Sargent (UMF): Solo HR in Game 2
  • Hector Perez (UMPI): 5-for-7 across both games with two RBIs, three SB
  • Garrett Chadwick (UMPI): 7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R (Game 2 win), two RBIs at the plate
UP NEXT:

UMF returns to action Wednesday night for a non-conference matchup at Bowdoin College against the Polar Bears. Originally scheduled for March 2, first pitch is set for 6:00 PM tomorrow evening.
