NEW LONDON, Conn. – University of Maine at Farmington senior track and field standouts Ben Vachon (Portland, Maine) and Justin Castaldo (Scarborough, Maine) scored at the New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Coast Guard Academy, earning All-Region honors. With their performances, Vachon and Castaldo became the fourth and fifth athletes in program history to receive outdoor track and field All-Region recognition.
Castaldo posted a time of 32:15.69 in the 10,000 meters to place fourth overall. The top eight finishers in each event score for their teams and receive All-Region honors. Castaldo earned four points for the Beavers and set a new program record with his impressive run.
Sophomore Andrew LaFlamme (Nashua, N.H.) also competed in the 10,000 meters, placing 19th overall with a solid time of 33:53.47.
In the long jump, Vachon reached 6.86 meters with his best attempt, finishing seventh overall. His mark set a new program record and earned two points for the Beavers.
Junior Nate Trussell (Berwick, Maine) narrowly missed out on All-New England honors, placing ninth in the 110-meter hurdles preliminary round. Trussell clocked a time of 15.03 seconds—just eight-hundredths of a second shy of qualifying for the final round.
Owen Booker (Lisbon, Maine) also competed in the long jump on Friday, placing 16th with a top jump of 6.56 meters.
In the shot put, sophomore Alex Crews (Winslow, Maine) turned in a strong showing, placing 16th with a best throw of 13.61 meters.
Farmington also delivered solid performances in both the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays. The 4x100-meter team of Trussell, Logan Burns (Islesboro, Maine), Seamus Reeve (Kittery, Maine), and Vachon placed 15th overall with a time of 43.27 seconds in a highly competitive field. The 4x400-meter relay team—comprised of Burns, Vachon, Booker, and Castaldo—clocked a 3:34.76 to place 23rd.
