Field Hockey Suffer Season Opening Setback at Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team suffered a 7–0 setback against Smith College on Friday evening in the Caryl Newhof Classic, hosted by the Bears.

How It Happened:

Junior goalkeeper Ella Grant (Sturbridge, Mass.) was tested early and often by Smith's potent offense. Grant made four point-blank saves in the opening seven minutes to keep the game scoreless.

Smith eventually broke through when Annika Peterson fed an open Callahan Day, who slotted a shot past Grant to give the Bears a 1-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

The score remained unchanged until the first minute of the second quarter, when Gracie Hylton received a pass from Halie Yang and found the back of the cage to double the lead. Day added her second goal five minutes later, extending the advantage to 3-0.

Farmington held strong defensively through much of the first half and managed one shot of their own — a strike from Ann Buffington (Enfield, N.H.) in the 23rd minute.

Smith broke the game open in the third quarter with relentless pressure. Hylton notched her second goal early in the second half to make it 4-0. Anouk Bosket and Maya Zager each added goals later in the quarter, giving the Bears a 6-0 lead heading into the fourth.

Just 13 seconds into the final period, Grace Irizarry scored Smith's seventh goal.

Farmington responded with its best offensive spell of the game, earning its first penalty corner just 20 seconds after Irizarry's goal. The ball found the stick of Zoey Pennell (Saco, Maine), who ripped a shot on frame, but Smith goalkeeper Iseul Park made a strong save to preserve the shutout.

Team Stats:

Smith controlled the tempo throughout the match, outshooting Farmington 23-2, including 20-2 in shots on goal. The Bears also held an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The Goalkeepers:

Ella Grant picked up where she left off in 2024, tallying 13 saves in the hard-fought loss. Iseul Park recorded two saves to earn the shutout victory.

UP NEXT:

The Beavers will look to get in the win column on Saturday afternoon in Day Two of the Caryl Newhof Classic, taking on Gordon College at 12:00 p.m. The Scots are also looking for their first win after falling 10–0 to Westfield State on Friday evening.
