Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Broncos Score Two Unanswered to Get Past Farmington

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the second half but conceded a pair of goals 16 minutes apart, dropping a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) battle to SUNY Delhi on Sunday afternoon at Leib Field.

The Records:

With the setback, the Beavers moved to 4-4-1 overall and 3-2-0 in NAC play. The victory lifted the Broncos to 2-3-5 overall and 1-1-2 in conference play.

How it Happened:

In what was a highly intense, physical, back-and-forth battle, the Broncos did just enough to secure the win.

The opening half was scoreless, with both teams controlling possession at different times. Shots were even at 6-6 heading into halftime, while Delhi held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Despite being held off the board in the first half, Farmington wasted no time striking early in the second. Annimer Ibrahim (Lewiston, Maine) lofted a corner kick from the right side that found Arden Weaver (Surry, Maine), who emphatically headed the ball into the back of the net in the 48th minute. It was Weaver's second goal of the season.

Farmington's lead lasted just six minutes before the Broncos answered with a goal of their own. Matt Serrao sent a corner from the right side to the back post, where Michael Adeyeye rose above the defense and headed the ball into the net to tie the game at 1-1.

As the game wore on, play grew increasingly physical. In the 70th minute, Farmington was whistled for a foul just outside the penalty area, setting up a free kick from about 20 yards out. Ian Silvero took the kick for Delhi, driving a low shot that slipped past the dive of Beaver goalkeeper Parker Day (Brentwood, N.H.) to make it 2-1.

The Beavers were unable to register a shot on frame the rest of the way, as Delhi held on for its first conference victory.

Stats of the Game:

  • Shots: Delhi 16, Farmington 12
  • Shots on Goal: Delhi 8, Farmington 3
  • Corner Kicks: Delhi 5, Farmington 4

The Goalkeepers:

Day controlled the penalty area for the Beavers, making six saves in the loss. Salvatore Meloni stopped two shots to earn the win for the Broncos.
