Big Second Half Pushes Terriers Past Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine — The University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team fell to Thomas College, 4-0, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field. Thomas broke the scoreless with less than a minute to go before half time before adding three goals in the second half to secure the victory.

The Records

Farmington moved to 0-10-2 overall and 0-4-0 in NAC play following the loss, while Thomas improved to 5-4-2 overall and 3-1-0 in conference action.

How it Happened

The Beavers controlled play for much of the opening half, holding a steep 11-4 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes of action. Thomas goalkeeper Emily Rock was put to the test, recording five saves in the opening 25 minutes to maintain the scoreless tie.

The Beavers backline did a strong job of limiting the Terriers' opportunities. Farmington goalkeeper Roo Sawyer (Londonderry, N.H.) recorded one save in the first ten minutes of action but did not see another shot on target until the final minute of the first half. Thomas opened the scoring in the 45th minute when Riley Smith found the back of the net, giving the Terriers a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.

The goal from Smith was all the momentum shift that Thomas needed. Following halftime, the Terriers began to control the play and were able to extend its lead in the 62nd minute when Smith scored her second goal of the afternoon off an assist from Briley Rutledge to make it 2-0. Thomas wasted no time extending their lead to three as just over a minute later Yaribel Pena added another goal for the Terriers, finishing a pass from Smith to push the lead to 3-0.

Smith completed her hat trick in the 71st minute, scoring an unassisted goal to cap the scoring at 4-0.

After firing off 11 shots in the first half, Farmington was held to just five shot attempts in the second half. The Beavers' best opportunity to score came in the 70th minute when senior forward Emma Dunn's (Farmington, Maine) shot attempt struck the crossbar.
