New England College Scores Early in 1-0 Win Over Farmington

HENNIKER, N.H. - The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team surrendered a goal late in the first quarter and was unable to find the tying marker, falling to New England College, 1-0, on Monday afternoon in non-conference action at Don Melander Field.

The Records:

Farmington fell to 3-8 overall following the loss, while New England College improved to 7-5 overall.

How it Happened:

New England College applied pressure early in the opening quarter, earning five penalty corners and generating six shots in the first 15 minutes of action. Farmington's backline led by goalkeeper Hailey Johnson (Augusta, Maine) thwarted numerous NEC scoring opportunities but the Pilgrims would not be denied. The Pilgrims broke through at the 13:07 mark when Kacey McClay found the back of the cage, converting on the fifth penalty corner of the quarter, off an assist from Adelaide Kelly to take a 1-0 advantage.

The Beavers looked to respond in the second quarter, earning their first penalty corner of the game at the 20:02 mark, but were unable to put a shot on target. Farmington's defense continued to battle, limiting the Pilgrims to four shots in the second quarter as the Beavers headed into halftime trailing by just one.

New England College continued to generate scoring opportunities in the third quarter, earning five penalty corners and putting two shots on goal. Abigail Herlihy (Nashua, N.H.), who took over in goal to start the second half, came up with a pair of saves to keep Farmington within striking distance. The Beavers also threatened offensively when Gabby Vincentsen put a shot off the post at the 34:33 mark, but the ball was cleared away as the Pilgrims maintained their one-goal lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Farmington's defense remained resilient in the final 15 minutes as New England College generated eight penalty corners and five shots in the fourth quarter, pushing for an insurance marker. Only one of the shot attempts was on target, forcing Herlihy to record another save to keep the deficit at one. The Beavers were unable to mount sustained pressure of their own and could not find the equalizer as the Pilgrims held on for the 1-0 victory.
