Early Strike Proves Costly as Farmington Falls to Johnson, 1-0

FARMINGTON, Maine — The University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team fell to Vermont State University Johnson, 1-0, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Leib Field. The Badgers scored an early goal in the third minute and held off the Beavers for the remainder of the contest to secure the victory.

Farmington moved to 0-12-2 overall and 0-5-0 in NAC play following the loss, while Vermont State Johnson improved to 6-7-0 overall and 2-3-0 in conference action.

How it Happened

Vermont State Johnson struck early, finding the back of the net in the third minute when Maddie Power blasted a shot from about 25 yards out into the upper left hand corner of the net to give the Badgers a 1-0 advantage.

Farmington had a pair of shots in the opening half as Miah Coffin (Otis, Maine) sent a rocket past the outside of the left post and Rita Benoit (Hallowell, Maine) had her free kick opportunity blocked by the Badger wall. Farmington goalkeeper Roo Sawyer (Londonderry, N.H.) helped keep the deficit at one, recording three saves in the first half to keep the Beavers within striking distance.

Farmington came out with more offensive pressure following halftime, generating eight shots in the second half, turning momentum in their favor. Vivian Bishop (North Rose, N.Y.) tested Vermont State Johnson goalkeeper Sophia Johnson early in the period, but Johnson made the save to preserve the Badgers' lead.

The Beavers continued to search for the equalizer as the half progressed. Halle Clifford (Blue Hill, Maine) put two shots on target, while Kyri Meak (Winslow, Maine) also forced a save late in the contest. Johnson turned aside each attempt to help the Badgers maintain its narrow advantage through the final whistle.
