LAKE PLACID, New York - The University of Maine at Farmington freeski team placed second overall on Wednesday in the USCSA Freeski Rail Jam National Championship, amassing 23 place points.
Westminster University swept the podium en route to claiming the National Championship. Simon Miller won the individual gold medal.
The rail jam event began on Monday with the qualifying heats. A total of 45 athletes competed on Monday, with the top 15 advancing to the Finals that took place on Wednesday. Farmington opened with five athletes competing on Monday, four of whom placed inside the top 15 and advanced to the Finals.
Arden Weaver (Surry, Maine), Logan Dube (Phillips, Maine), Max Labonte (Livermore, Maine), and Maxwell Hamilton (Brunswick, Maine) all advanced to the Finals, while Dominique Richard (Lewiston, Maine) narrowly missed a spot, placing 17th after the qualifying round.
On Wednesday, the Beavers were led by Labonte, who placed fifth overall after putting together a nearly flawless run. He was followed by Hamilton, who finished seventh, and Weaver, who placed 11th. Needing just three skiers to earn a team score, Dube did not factor into the overall team placement but still placed 13th overall in the event.
