UMF Splits NAC Opening Doubleheader at Lesley

Written by; Aaron Goschke '25

LEXINGTON, Mass. – The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team opened North Atlantic Conference play with a doubleheader split at Lesley on Saturday afternoon, dropping the opener 6-4 before responding with an 8-0 shutout victory in game two at Minuteman High School Field.

Game One; Lesley 6 - Farmington 4

In the first game, UMF grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening inning as Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) and Brady Vincent (Auburn, Maine) worked walks ahead of Tyler Rosa (Morgan Hill, Calif.), who lined a two-run double to right-center. Lesley answered immediately with two runs in the bottom half, then moved in front 3-2 in the second on a triple by Anthony Nyhuis and a sacrifice fly from Nathan Young.

The Beavers regained the lead in the fifth. Ike Wrigley (Farmington, Maine) doubled to start the inning, and UMF took advantage of two Lesley errors to score twice, including an RBI sacrifice fly from Vincent, to go ahead 4-3. The Lynx tied the game with an unearned run in the sixth before breaking through in the eighth, using a triple from Gerlys Martinez and RBI singles from Owen Finnegan and Payne Johnson to secure the 6-4 win.

Rosa drove in two runs in the opener, while Hayden Durrell (Madrid, Maine) collected two hits. Will Buchholz (Maynard, Mass.) got the start for UMF and pitched well across five innings, keeping the Beavers in the game, while Kaleb Hussey (Topsham, Maine) was charged with the loss.

Game Two; Farmington 8 - Lesley 0

UMF bounced back quickly in game two. Durrell scored the game's first run on an RBI triple by Vincent in the opening inning, and the Beavers added three more in the second. Camden Cook (Littleton, N.H.) drew an RBI walk before Wrigley delivered a two-run single to extend the lead to 4-0.

That was plenty for Vincent, who starred both on the mound and at the plate. He tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, and later helped break the game open in the sixth with a three-run double to right field. Earlier in the inning, Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) had forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk.

Maddox Santone (Fairfield, Maine) recorded the final four outs to complete the shutout. Vincent finished with four RBI on a triple and a double, while Wrigley added two RBI and Ben Mello (Gloucester, Mass.) scored twice.

With the split, the Beavers moved to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in NAC play, while Lesley finished the day at 7-6 overall and 4-2 in conference action.

UMF and Lesley will meet again on Sunday for another NAC doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and game two set for 2:30 p.m.
