Farmington Unable to Hold off Husson

BANGOR, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team was able to build leads in both game one and game two but was unable to hold off Husson University, dropping both ends of a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader on Sunday. Husson took game one, 6-2, before earning a 6-5 win in eight innings in game two.

Game One; Husson 6 - Farmington 2

Farmington opened the scoring in the top of the second after the Eagles loaded the bases but were unable to score in the bottom of the first. Brady Vincent (Auburn, Maine) led off the inning with a walk in front of first-year outfielder Lucas Harmon (Monmouth, Maine), who belted his first collegiate home run, staking the Beavers to a 2-0 lead.

Husson wasted no time tying the game back up, scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the second. Henry Lausier led off the inning with a single, stole second, and later scored on a single from Yates Emerson. Colin Marshall executed a squeeze bunt to plate Trevor Poisson and tie the game at two.

The game stayed locked at two until the bottom of the fifth. A hit-by-pitch and a walk to lead off the inning put the Eagles in business. Liam Kelley dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but the Beavers looked to get the lead runner; the throw was not in time and everyone was safe, loading the bases for Hunter Curtis. Curtis came through with a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles their first lead of the game. Poisson made it a 4-2 game when he delivered a two-out single to left.

Husson tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to open up a 6-2 lead. Colin Marshall led off the inning with a walk, moved over to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on an RBI single from Preston Libby. Libby later scored in the inning on an error.

Following Harmon's second-inning home run, the Beavers were held to one hit as Husson starter Avery Lawrence kept the Farmington offense at bay.

Game Two; Husson 6 - Farmington 5, 8 Innings

The Beavers' offense broke out in the first inning after a relatively quiet game one. Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) and Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) got things going with back-to-back singles to put two on with one out. After moving to second and third on a wild pitch, Marquis and Bloch came in to score on a two-run single from Vincent.

Following the Vincent single, Harmon was hit by a pitch and Hayden Durrell (Madrid, Maine) singled to load the bases for Ike Wrigley (Farmington, Maine). Wrigley singled to right-center, and Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine) walked with the bases still loaded to make it a 4-0 game and chase Husson starter Jack Karlonas from the game.

Max Hopkins came on in relief for Karlonas and worked out of further trouble to keep it a four-run game.

Farmington loaded the bases in the third on three consecutive walks in front of Lewis. Lewis singled up the middle to plate Farmington's fifth run of the game and force the Eagles to make another pitching change. Blake Littelfield came on out of the bullpen and struck out the next three hitters to strand the bases loaded.

Husson got a run back in the bottom of the third to make it 5-1. Poisson led off the inning with a walk and was later driven home on a two-out triple from Libby.

The game remained 5-1 into the bottom of the seventh as the Beavers got everything they could have asked for on the mound out of Bloch through six innings. He began to tire in the seventh as Husson rallied to tie the game at five.

A walk followed by a pair of singles loaded the bases with one out for Husson. Colin Marshall singled to right to make it a 5-2 game. The next batter, Libby, recorded his second triple of the game, clearing the bases and tying the game at five. Bloch was able to strand Libby at third and force extra innings, getting a pair of foul outs to end the inning.

Farmington went in order in the top of the eighth, setting up the Eagles for a chance to win it in the bottom half. Curtis led off with a walk, and back-to-back sacrifice bunt attempts that the Beavers were unable to convert into outs loaded the bases for Emerson. Emerson did what was needed, lifting a fly ball deep enough to left to allow Curtis to score and give Husson the 6-5 win.
