FARMINGTON, Maine - Junior pitcher Trent Holman (Dixfield, Maine) delivered the best outing of his collegiate career in game one of a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader to help lead the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team to a split with SUNY Cobleskill. Holman pitched 6 ? innings in game one, giving up just one run in the 8-1 victory. Farmington lost a nail-biter in game two, 3-2.
Game One; Farmington 8 - SUNY Cobleskill 1
Holman was efficient from the very first inning, using just four pitches to retire the side in the top of the first. It took him just six pitches to retire the side in the second, aided by Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine), who threw a baserunner out stealing second to end the inning.
The Beavers gave Holman some run support in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs to open up a 3-0 lead. First-year outfielder Lucas Harmon (Monmouth, Maine) started the rally with a one-out double. The next batter, Ike Wrigley (Farmington, Maine), followed with a double of his own to make it 1-0. After a hit by pitch, Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) singled to center to score Wrigley, but the ball got away from the Fighting Tigers' center fielder, allowing Hayden Durrell (Madrid, Maine) to come all the way around to score.
The Beavers continued to swing the bats well in the bottom of the third, scoring four more runs to break the game open. A hit by pitch, a single from Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.), and a walk loaded the bases in front of Harmon. Harmon delivered his second double in as many innings, scoring a pair and making it 5-0. Wrigley followed with another big hit, this time a two-run single that made it a 7-0 game.
Farmington took advantage of an error in the bottom of the fourth to plate its eighth run of the game, giving Holman more than enough run support.
Holman found himself in trouble in the top of the fifth, loading the bases on a walk, a single, and a hit by pitch. However, a popup followed by consecutive strikeouts kept Cobleskill off the scoreboard.
Holman worked into the seventh as he began to tire. Logan Firment led off with a single and then moved to second on an error. After Holman struck out the next batter he faced, Cole Platt walked to end Holman's day. The Beavers turned to Kyle Sawyer (Saco, Maine), who recorded two groundouts to end the game. Firment was able to score on the first groundout, making it an 8-1 final.

Both teams went in order in the first, but Cobleskill was able to get on the scoreboard in the top of the second. Korin Laurilla hit a one-out double and then moved to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Firment put runners at the corners, Zach Papanikolatos hit a ground ball to third that the Beavers tried to turn into a double play to end the inning. The play developed too slowly, and Papanikolatos beat the return throw to first while Laurilla crossed the plate to make it 1-0. Platt followed with a single that squirted through the legs of the Farmington left fielder, allowing Papanikolatos to score all the way from first on the play.
Farmington was shut down offensively for the first three innings by Cobleskill starting pitcher Hunter Smith, who retired the first nine batters he faced. Farmington started to get its bats going in the bottom of the fourth, however. Tyler Rosa (Morgan Hill, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After a walk to Bloch and a Brady Vincent (Auburn, Maine) single loaded the bases, Harmon stayed hot with an infield single to plate Rosa and cut the deficit in half.
As he did in game one, Wrigley came through with a big hit, singling to left with two strikes to plate Bloch and tie the game. Wrigley's hit forced Smith out of the game and prompted Cobleskill to go to its bullpen. The new pitcher, Jared Ainsworth, induced an inning-ending double play to keep the game tied at two.
Cobleskill delivered the go-ahead and eventual winning run in the top of the sixth when Firment crushed a leadoff solo home run to left, making it a 3-2 game.
Farmington threatened in the bottom half of the sixth, with Bloch leading off with a walk and Vincent following with another single. Harmon ripped a line drive right at the second baseman, who snared it and threw to first to double up Vincent and thwart Farmington's opportunity.
Rosa drew a two-out walk in the seventh, but the Beavers could not bring him in.
