Beavers Falter in 4th Quarter, Fall 2-1 at Western Connecticut

DANBURY, Conn. - The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team held a one-goal advantage through three quarters, but WestConn rallied with two fourth-quarter goals to secure a 2-1 victory over the Beavers on Friday evening at Westside Stadium.

Senior Gabby Vincentsen (Bristol, Maine) scored Farmington's lone goal of the game, while senior goalkeeper Abigail Herlihy (Nashua, N.H.) turned aside six shots in the second half.

How it Happened:

The Beavers and Wolves played to a scoreless first period as WestConn generated three shots and one penalty corner during the opening 15 minutes, but junior goalkeeper Hailey Johnson (Augusta, Maine) turned aside all three shots on goal to keep the game scoreless.

Farmington broke through in the second quarter as Vincentsen scored her second goal of the season at the 11:25 mark, with senior Autumn Freeman (Byron, Maine) providing the assist. The goal came shortly after the Beavers earned their first penalty corner of the game, giving Farmington a 1-0 advantage. The Beavers carried the one-goal lead into halftime.

Neither team was able to find the back of the cage during a scoreless third quarter. WestConn generated six shots and five penalty corners during the period, but the Farmington defense, led by Herlihy who took over to start the third quarter, turned aside five shots to preserve Farmington's 1-0 advantage heading into the final quarter.

WestConn quickly tied the game up in the opening moments of the fourth quarter as Madison Preston scored at the 2:06 mark, with Alyssa Montalvo picking up the assist to even the score at 1-1.

The Wolves completed the comeback just over six minutes later when Erin Frank found the back of the cage at the 8:35 mark, giving WestConn its first lead of the game at 2-1.

The Beavers continued to battle in the closing minutes, but WestConn's defense held firm to secure the 2-1 victory.

The Goalkeepers:

Johnson got the start in net for Farmington, making six saves while keeping WestConn off the scoreboard during the opening 30 minutes of action. Herlihy played the entire second half, turning aside six shots.

WestConn used Brooklyn Testa for the entire game and made two saves while allowing one goal.

The Beavers will return to action on Saturday afternoon, completing their weekend trip to Connecticut against the University of Saint Joseph's. Game time is set for 12:00 PM.
