Beaver Lose Heartbreaker in Overtime at USJ

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team battled Saint Joseph's (Conn.) into overtime, but the Blue Jays scored 4:37 into the extra period to secure a 4-3 victory over the Beavers on Saturday afternoon at USJ FH Field.

The Records:

Farmington moved to 1-4 on the season following the loss. Saint Joseph's (Conn.) improved to 3-1 on the season.

How it Happened:

Both teams got off to a quick start offensively in the opening quarter as the teams combined to score three goals in the first 12 minutes of play.

The Blue Jays struck first just three minutes and 33 seconds into the opening quarter when Grace Kociszewski found the back of the cage off a feed from Alexa Maser to give Saint Joseph's an early 1-0 advantage.

Farmington answered just under three minutes later to knot the game at one. Junior forward Mikayla Wilcox (Farmington, Maine) scored her first goal of the season off a feed from Izzy Derosby (Waterville, Maine), leveling the game at 1-1.

Saint Joseph's regained the lead with just over three minutes remaining in the opening quarter when Juliana Meglio scored off another assist from Maser, sending the Blue Jays into the second quarter with a 2-1 advantage.

The Beavers responded early in the second quarter, tying the game at two in the 23rd minute. Ruby Taylor (Poland, Maine) picked up her third goal of the season off an assist from Autumn Freeman (Byron, Maine), making it a 2-2 game.

Neither team was able to break the deadlock before halftime as the game remained tied at two heading into the second half.

The Blue Jays regained the lead in the third quarter when Alyssa Milligan scored an unassisted marker just 3:45 into the period, putting Saint Joseph's ahead 3-2.

Saint Joseph's maintained the one-goal advantage into the closing minutes of the fourth quarter when Farmington found the tying goal. Cadence Peters (Poland, Maine) scored her second goal of the season with just under three minutes left in the game to knot the game up at three and force overtime. Gabby Vincentsen (Bristol, Maine) was credited with the assist on Peters' goal.

Saint Joseph's ended the contest 4:37 into overtime when Meglio scored her second goal of the afternoon, cleaning up a rebound after Abigail Herlihy (Nashua, N.H.) had made an initial save on a chance from Emily Curtis.

The Goalkeepers:

Hailey Johnson (Augusta, Maine) started in goal for the Beavers and made three saves while allowing two goals over the opening 30 minutes. Herlihy played the final 34:37, making six saves and allowing two goals. Jaci Felix-Hull made two saves in goal for Saint Joseph's (Conn.) to earn the victory.

The Beavers will return to Maine and travel to Standish on Wednesday for a non-conference battle with Saint Joseph's College of Maine. Game time is set for 5:00 PM.
