Farmington Falls on the Road to Saint Joseph’s College, 2-0

STANDISH, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey hung tough against Saint Joseph's College of Maine but a goal late in the second quarter and an insurance marker in the 57th minute were enough to lead the Monks to a 2-0 win over the Beavers on
Wednesday evening.

The Records:

Farmington moved to 1-5 on the season following the loss. Saint Joseph's (Me.) improved to 3-3 with the victory.

How it Happened:

The Monks set the tone in the first quarter, holding a steep 8-1 advantage in shots and a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners following the first 15 minutes of action. Farmington goalkeeper Hailey Johnson kept the Monks off the scoreboard in the opening quarter, making four saves. 

Johnson continued to make life difficult on the Monks in the second quarter, turning aside four more shots as SJC upped their offensive pressure. Saint Joseph's finally broke through in the 28th minute when Myia SeeHusen found the back of the cage off an assist from Chloe Masse to give the Monks a 1-0 advantage that they clung onto heading into halftime. 

Neither team was able to find the back of the cage during the third quarter as Saint Joseph's maintained its 1-0 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

After mustering just one shot in the opening half of play, Farmington began to find their footing some in the third quarter, firing off three shots, making Monks goalkeeper Kimberley McLaughlin make a pair of saves to keep the Beavers off the scoreboard.

The Monks added an insurance goal with just 3:33 remaining in regulation when Dasia Alberico scored an unassisted goal to extend Saint Joseph's lead to 2-0.

Farmington continued to pressure the Monks in the closing minutes, earning three penalty corners and generating four shots during the final two minutes of play. McLaughlin turned aside three Farmington shots during the final 1:06 to preserve the shutout.

The Goalkeepers:

Johnson started in goal for the Beavers and played all 60 minutes, making 11 saves while allowing two goals. McLaughlin played all 60 minutes in goal for Saint Joseph's College, making six saves to earn the shutout.

The Beavers will look to get back into the win column on Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM on the road against UMass Boston.
